Overholtzer, Wojciechowski Earn Weekly Baseball Honors

SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? UNC Greensboro senior Corey Overholtzer has been named the Southern Conference Baseball Player of the Week while The Citadel right-hander Asher Wojciechowski has been selected as the league’s Pitcher of the Week from the opening weekend of the 2010 baseball season.

Overholtzer was 5-for-9 at the plate in the Spartans’ three-game sweep of Cleveland State with two home runs, four RBIs and seven runs scored. The centerfielder was instrumental in UNCG’s come-from-behind wins on Saturday and Sunday, belting a two-out game-tying homer in the ninth inning on Saturday to go along with a solo homer and an RBI single in the eighth and ninth frames on Sunday. For the week, the Frederick, Md., native slugged 1.333 and had an on-base percentage of .733.

Wojciechowski struck out nine batters over seven innings in The Citadel’s 4-1 win against East Tennessee State in the season opener on Friday afternoon. The junior allowed just three singles and one run on the day while holding the Buccaneers hitless over the final four innings. A native of Sturgis, Mich., Wojciechowski threw 99 pitches, and his seven innings of work were the most of any league pitcher over the weekend.

Other hitters receiving consideration were The Citadel’s Bryan Altman, College of Charleston’s Jose Rodriguez, Western Carolina’s Tyler White, Appalachian State’s Wes Hobson, Davidson’s James Cerbie, Elon’s Justin Hilt, Georgia Southern’s Roman Grimaldi, Samford’s Mason Meredeth and Wofford’s Mac Doyle.

Other top performers among pitchers were UNC Greensboro’s Greg Smith, Appalachian State’s Matt Andress, Samford’s Lex Rutledge, College of Charleston’s Josh Salay, Davidson’s Ryan Overcash, Elon’s Daniel Britt, Western Carolina’s Vance Chavis and Wofford’s J.D. Osborne.
