Josefine Sundh Second, Western Carolina Women's Golf Third at Kiawah Island Classic
Swedish junior carded a three-under 69 to stand one stroke off lead in first event of the spring
Kiawah Island, S.C. - Junior Josefine Sundh carded a three-under 69 to stand one stroke off the individual lead, pacing Western Carolina to third after the opening round of the Edwin Watts / Kiawah Island Classic on Sunday.
Sundh was among just seven of the 172 women's golfers to post an under par score on the opening 18 holes. She led all golfers in par 3 scoring at three-under and with five birdies, was tied for the most on the opening day.
Sundh and countryman, freshman Malin Jansson, gave the Catamounts two inside the top eight after 18 of the 54 scheduled holes in the spring opener for the squad. Jansson, who shot an even-par 72, scored par on 16 of the opening 18 holes on Sunday to pace the field in that category.
Senior Desiree Karlsson and sophomore teammate Blaire Minter each shot four-over 76 to stand amidst a 16-way tie for 42nd after the opening day, with Rachel Nelson one stroke back in a tie for 58th after shooting 77.
Augusta State was the lone squad to shoot under par through the opening round after recording a four-under 284 to lead East Carolina by six strokes as the Pirates carded 290 as a squad. WCU was third at 293, nine strokes off the pace, followed by Miami (Fla.) and East Tennessee State tied for fourth with identical scores of eight-over, 296.
WCU played the Cougar Point course on Sunday which featured an average score of 76.21 through the opening 18 holes. For Monday's second round, the Catamounts will play the Oak Point course, which challenged golfers to the tune of 83.29 average strokes. Western Carolina will be paired with Missouri State (14th-t) and players from Maryland which are competing as individuals, and will tee off beginning at 9:30 am.
Elon Women's Golf Just Outside of Top-10 After One Round
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. -- Tara McFadden carded a 74 on day one of the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic hosted by College of Charleston to lead the Elon women's golf team to a 13th-place showing. The Phoenix is just one stroke out of ninth place after a first round score of 304. Augusta State's 284 leads the field of 33 teams following the first of three rounds at the Oak Point Golf Club.
McFadden's 74 places her in a tie for 25th in the 172-golfer field. Just two strokes back of McFadden is Lauren Lebak who is tied for 42nd. Both Kelsey Johnson and Dani Mullen shot a 77 in round one and are tied for 58th. Shannon Prunty's 82 placed her in a tie for 127th after day one.
Augusta State's Sarah Mooney sits atop the leaderboard after recording a 68 in her round on Sunday. Western Carolina's Josefine Sundh is just one stroke back.
The rest of the top-five teams include East Carolina (290), Western Carolina (293), Miami (296) and East Tennessee State (296).
Elon is one stroke behind a foursome of Kansas, Oregon State, Middle Tennessee State and Minnesota. The Phoenix also holds a one stroke advantage over both Florida International and Missouri State.
Elon sits second among Southern Conference teams in the field. The Phoenix leads College of Charleston (T16th, 307) and The Citadel (32nd, 344).
Round two will be played on Monday before the tournament concludes on Tuesday.
Cougars Tied for 16th after First Round of Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic
Emily Rapp (Simpsonville, S.C.) posted three birdies and nine pars en route to a 75 to lead the College of Charleston women's golf team to a tie for 16th after the first round of the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic being held at Cougar and Oak Point in Kiawah Island, S.C. Augusta State fired a 284 to lead the tournament, with East Carolina in second with a 290. The Cougars are tied with Central Arkansas with a 307 each.
The Cougars played the first round at Cougar Point and will take on Oak Point in the second round Monday morning. After the second round the top 20 teams will play Cougar Point for the tournament championship, while the remaining teams will play for the flight championship at Oak Point.
Following Rapp with her 75 and her tie for 32nd was Vanessa Koechli (Greer, S.C.) who fired a 76 for a tie at 42nd, after nailing a birdie on the 15th hole and an eagle on hole 11. Leigh Whittaker (Baden-Baden, Germany) tied for 58th with her 77 on the day. Katharina Boehm (Poing, Germany) shot a 79 for a tie at 80th and Ainhoa Nogales (Pozuelo de Alarcon, Spain) shot an 80 for a tie at 96th. Anna Martin (Easley, S.C.) competed for the Cougars as an individual and tied for 136th with an 84.
Charleston tees off at Oak Point from hole #10 beginning at 10:30 Monday in second round action.
