Appalachian State 7, Winston-Salem State 0
Appalachian State 7, Catawba 0

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.- Appalachian State University men's tennis captured its fourth-straight win Sunday , as the Apps downed Winston-Salem State and Catawba. With the victory, ASU improves to 4-1 on the 2009-10 campaign.

The Mountaineers raced past their opponents in doubles play, as the Black and Gold went 3-0 in doubles action.

The team of
Trent Constance and Peter Jacobs had no trouble with Brian Coxton and Ian Hunter at the number one doubles spot, winning 8-1, while Philip Kloc and Alain Humblet downed their competitors as well, winning by the same score.

Seeing his first match action of the year, freshman
Chris Mauch and partner Britton Webb easily defeated Antentor Hinton and Brooks Calvin, notching an 8-0 victory.

Appalachian had no problems in singles action either, winning all six matches.

Constance defeated Coxton at the number one singles position winning 6-3, 6-1 and Humblet saw action at the number two spot, winning 6-0, 6-0.

Freshmen
Andrew McKinnonn and Luka Vujinovic were successful against Winston-Salem Stats as well, both grabbing two set victories at the three and four spots.

Jordan Moser and Russ Ferrari rounded out the match at the five and six positions, downing their opponents each picking up wins in two sets.

Appalachian's strong play continued against Catawba as the Mountaineers' won all six singles matches and all three doubles match once again.

Kloc and Humblet defeated their opponent at the number one doubles spot, winning 8-2, while Ezekiel Sansing and McKinnonn won 8-1. Keeping ASU perfect in doubles play, Vujinovic and Moser beat Corey Eldridge and Cyle Peterson 8-3.

Taking over the number one singles spot, Jacobs and Constance raced past their opponents, downing them in two sets, while Kloc and Sansing earned wins at the three and four spots.

Webb and Mauch were also victorious at the five and six singles positions.

The Apps' return to action Saturday February 27, as they travel to Columbia, S.C. to take on South Carolina.


Georgia
Southern 7, Hampton 0

STATESBORO, GA - Georgia Southern dropped only one match in doubles and singles play combined to complete a 7-0 sweep over the Hampton Pirates Sunday morning (Feb. 21) at the Hanner Tennis Complex. Five of six singles matches were won in straight sets by the Eagles, who improved to 3-5 on the year. Hampton faltered to 1-1 with the loss.

"We played a solid match today," said head coach Justin Miles. "We improved upon our mistakes from our last match which was positive. But we still need to stay focused and get ready for our next match."

Only three games were dropped by GSU before the doubles point was clinched by the Eagles. Alain Garrido and Matthijs Verdam first walked off the courts carrying an 8-1 match win with them moments before Jayraj Jadeja and Justin Flynn clinched the point with an 8-2 victory at the two seed.

With the early advantage, Georgia Southern quickly opened its lead moving into singles action with quick wins at three and five. Bekkers waved only one game in 13 for a 6-1, 6-0 decision over Edson Alves at two, while Verdam dominated Kenneth Green for a 6-1, 6-1 win. Standing at 3-0, GS clinched the match with a Garrido victory at No. 4. The sophomore downed Alvin Fludd, 6-1, 6-2, to seal the win.

With the match decision already secured, the Eagles added three more singles wins to complete the sweep. Senior Jadeja was victorious at the top singles position in a super tiebreaker before Melian Puigventos grabbed a 6-0, 6-3 triumph over Gellert Varga at the two seed. Senior Flynn completed Georgia Southern's scoring with a straight set win at No.6 over Marcelo Redo.

Georgia Southern continues home court play welcoming Jacksonville on Tuesday, Feb. 23 for a 2:30 p.m. non-conference match-up.


UNC Greensboro 7, Charlotte 0

GREENSBORO, N.C. - UNC Greensboro raised its record to 5-1 on the spring season with a convincing 7-0 win over in-state rival Charlotte in men's tennis action Sunday evening at Starmount Country Club.

The Spartans won all three doubles matches and swept through four of the six singles matches in straight sets to wrap up their second win in as many days. Timion Meijs, Kyle Eddins and William John preserved the shutout by rallying from down a set to win in third-set tiebreakers. Each moved up a slot in the line-up after Yaroslav Litus was scratched from singles play.

Jacob Wright had the most impressive win of the evening. Wright topped Mortiz Bornhoester, 6-2 and 6-0.

The Spartans return to action next Sunday when it hosts Longwood for a 1 p.m. match back on the UNCG campus.


Troy
6, Wofford 1

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Wofford men's tennis team fell on Sunday afternoon to Troy University 6-1 on Sunday afternoon. The loss takes the Terriers record to 3-4 on the season while Troy improves to 5-2 on the year.

Troy was able to take a 1-0 advantage by winning all three doubles matches.  In singles competition Alan Donald was the only Terrier to record a victory. Donald won his number three singles match against Rolemburg Silva by a score of 7-5, 6-3.

After the match Wofford head coach Rod Ray said "Troy has a very good team and were determined to win. Playing a good team like them can only make up better and we plan to learn from today's match. Without a doubt, this experience can make us better as long as we are willing to take inventory".

The Terriers will return to action on February 25 when they will take on USC Upstate at 3:00 pm at the Reeves Tennis Center on the Wofford College Campus.


North Florida 6, College of Charleston 1

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - College of Charleston men's tennis claimed the first set in five of the six singles matches before eventually yielding a 6-1 decision to the University of North Florida on Sunday morning.

Sophomore Tome Delme was the only Cougar to win his singles match. Delme was the only player on either side to win in straight sets, defeating Daniel Sotomarino at the No.3 spot, 6-1, 6-1.

Delme was also successful in doubles competition, as he and junior Lukas Koncilia won their match 8-6 over top-seeded Kurt Gattiker and Taylor Albrecht. Delme finished the weekend with a perfect 2-0 record in both singles and doubles action. The pair is undefeated in dual matches this season.

Junior Mickael Boyer and senior Joe Nicolazzi both took the first set in a 6-1 decisive fashion at the No. 4 and 5 spots respectively, before falling to their opponents 6-4, 6-2 in the next two sets.

CofC falls to 2-2 on the season while the Osprey's improved to 6-2 after a match that lasted more than five hours.

The Cougars open up their conference schedule on Saturday when they visit Chattanooga for a 2 p.m. match.


Gardner-Webb 4, The Citadel 3
Clemson 6, The Citadel 1

CLEMSON, S.C. - The Citadel tennis team fell, 4-3, to Gardner-Webb on Saturday and the Clemson Tigers defeated the Bulldogs, 6-1, on Sunday afternoon at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center in Clemson, S.C.

Alberto Diaz defeated the Runnin' Bulldogs' Adam Knutsson-Sunblad, 6-0, 6-1, while David Orces won in a tiebreaker to Gardner-Webb's Rafael Altmayer, 6-4, 7-6(4). Luis Morett tallied the last Bulldog point with a 6-3, 6-3, win over the Runnin' Bulldogs' Jeremie Tardif.

In other singles action, Yufo Sutantio fell, 6-2, 6-2, to Gardner-Webb's Evgeny Slesarev while the Runnin' Bulldogs' Andrew Veeder defeated Josh Cook, 6-1, 6-2. Derek Dickey lost, 6-3, 6-4, to Gardner-Webb's Roman Piftor.

In doubles one, Sutantio and Diaz fell, 8-5, to the Runnin' Bulldogs' Slesarev and Altmayer. Dickey and Morett dropped, 8-3, to Gardner-Webb's Knutsson-Sunblad and Piftor while Gardner-Webb's Veeder and Tardif defeated Orces and Cook, 8-6.

The Bulldogs collected the lone point in doubles play against Clemson. In doubles one, Diaz defeated the Tigers' Rok Bizjak and Derek DiFazio, 8-6, and in doubles three, Cook and Orces paired to defeat Clemson's Kevin Galloway and Wes Moran, 8-5. Dickey and Morett fell, 8-4, to the Tigers' Carlos Alvarez and Juan Bolona.

In singles, Sutantio lost, 6-3, 6-4, to Clemson's DiFazio while Diaz fell, 6-3, 6-3, to the Tigers' Avarez. Clemson's Galloway defeated Orces, 6-2, 6-2, and Cook dropped, 6-1, 6-1, to the Tigers' Robert Pietrucha. Morett was defeated by Clemson's Bolona, 6-3, 6-2, and Dickey closed out singles play with a 6-3, 6-1, loss to the Tigers' Moritz  Dettinger.

The Bulldogs fall to 0-4 on the season. The Citadel will search for victory when they host Case Western Reserve on Monday, March 8 at 2 p.m. at the Earle Tennis Center. This match marks the first of nine consecutive matches at home for the Bulldogs.


USC Upstate 5, Elon 2

ELON, N.C. - After a long road stretch, the Elon men's tennis team finally played in front of its home crowd on a spring-like Sunday afternoon, but 73rd-ranked USC Upstate spoiled Elon's home opener with a 5-2 victory over the Phoenix. Juniors Chase Helpingstine and Alberto Rojas each picked up singles victories, but Elon dropped to 0-8 on the young season. USC Upstate improved to 3-4 overall.
 
"It was good to get outside for the first time this year," stated Elon head coach Michael Leonard. "We competed hard, but it was disappointing to lose the doubles point. We just have to keep playing hard and winning will take care of itself."
 
Elon continues to try new doubles combinations during this early non-conference play. Upstate came away with big wins at number one and two to grab the early advantage. A bright spot in doubles action was Elon newcomers Tommy Darling and Eric Turner who teamed up for the first time this season to earn a 9-7 victory over USC Upstate's Gary Goudsmet and Jack Roux at number three.  
 
The Spartans fed off the momentum of winning the doubles point to earn victories in four of the six singles matches. Rojas lost only one game in a straight set win over Goudsmet at number four, but Upstate pulled out wins at number five, one and six to clinch the victory. Helpingstine played a very competitive match at number two, pulling out the 7-6 (10-8), 6-4 win against Javier Tori. Helpingstine is 4-4 in dual action this year. In a lengthy bout at number three, the Spartans' Rodriguez managed to edge out a 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 victory over Turner.
 
Elon will look to break into the win column next weekend when it hosts Lees-McRae and Charlotte on Saturday, February 27 beginning at 9:30 a.m.
