College of Charleston 5, Stetson 2
DELAND, Fla. - College of Charleston's women's tennis team handed Stetson its second loss of the 2010 season on Friday afternoon at Mandy Stoll Tennis Center. The Cougars defeated the Hatters, 5-2.
Stetson (4-2) picked up the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots. Top-seeded Holly Dowse and Emma Hayman forced Valentina Galbarini and Carolina D.L. Santos to extra games before eventually falling 9-7. Senior Anna Lee Evans competed in her first doubles match of the season, pairing up with junior Kinsey Casey to defeat Stetson's Breanna Atkinson and Katherine Nowicki, 8-5.
Charleston (2-3) took five of the six matches in singles competition. Sophomore Caroline Newman earned the first point for the Cougars with a 6-2, 6-0 victory at the No. 4 spot. Hayman followed suit with a victory over second-seeded Unnati Purushotham. After dropping the first set 6-3, Hayman rebounded to win the next two sets 6-1, 6-0.
Freshman Irene Viana and Evans also won their matches in three sets. Top-seeded Dowse picked up her first singles victory of the season with a 7-6, 6-1 victory over Galbarini.
Chattanooga 6, North Alabama 1
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's tennis team scored its first win of the season with a 7-0 victory against North Alabama today. The Lady Mocs improved to 1-2 on the year while UNA falls to 0-3.
UTC jumped out to a 1-0 lead after sweeping the doubles point. Sophomore Emily Hangstefer and freshman Jenna Nurik moved to 9-3 on the year with an 8-1 win in the top spot. Sophomore Charlotte Bossy and senior Beata Knizat followed that up with an 8-2 win at No. 3. Junior Grace Robinette and sophomore Shaina Singh finished the doubles by posting an 8-2 win at No. 2.
Knizat put the Lady Mocs up 2-0, cruising to a 6-0, 6-0 win against Jessica Keehn. It is the first singles win of the spring for the senior, evening her record at 2-2 on the year.
Robinette followed that with a 6-1, 6-1win in the No. 6 match. Sidelined for much of her career with injuries, Robinette competed in singles action for the first time since the 2007-08 season.
Singh gave the Lady Mocs a 4-0 lead and secured the team win with a 6-1, 6-1, victory over Teresa Franco at No. 3. It was Singh's team-high ninth singles win of the season.
Nurik and Hangstefer also won their singles matches. Hangstefer's No. 2 bout with Victoria Rees was the only one of the day to go to a third set. She won the tiebreaker 11-9.
Chattanooga now hits the road for a visit to Austin Peay in Clarksville, Tenn., on Sunday. Match time is set for 2:00 p.m. (E.S.T.) so be sure to check back to GoMocs.com for complete scores and recap. The Lady Mocs' next home match is Feb. 26 against Lipscomb at 2:30 p.m. on the UTC Tennis Courts.
East Carolina 6, Appalachian State 1
BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University women's tennis posted a solid effort, but fell short Friday afternoon, as the Apps dropped a 6-1 decision to East Carolina.
In three hard- fought doubles matches, East Carolina was able to capture wins in two of the three to grab the doubles point and take an early 1-0 match lead.
The team of Laura Janke and Jennifer Ansari fell at the number three doubles spot, dropping an 8-3 decision to Natalie Collins and Brooke Walter.
Gisela Fernandez and Blakeley Bean were able to earn a win for Appalachian at the number two doubles position, downing Petra Vogel and Yillian Zhang 8-4.
In the doubles point deciding match, Olivia Stannard and Ellie Linsell came up just short, as they lost 8-6 to their opponents at the number one spot.
The two teams continued to battle, as singles action was hotly contested as well.
Senior Caroline Mauch suffered a two-set loss to Collins at the number three singles spot, to open singles play as she dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision.
Despite winning a close first set 7-6, Ansari could not hang on for a win, as she fell in the next two sets, losing 6-3, 6-3 to Cook at the number two spot.
In the match-clincher for ECU, the Pirates were able to finish, as Fernandez lost 6-3, 6-1 to Vogel at the number four spot.
Perhaps the most impressive performance of the afternoon came at the number one position as Linsell took her opponent to three long sets. Linsell was defeated in the first, rebounded and grabbed a win in the second set and then lost 6-3 in the third.
At the number five singles spot, Stannard downed Walter 6-3 in the first set then lost the next two sets, while Bean earned a thrilling win at the number six spot.
Appalachian continues with the 2010 season as the Black and Gold travels to Winston-Salem, N.C. to face Winston-Salem State and Catawba. The matches are scheduled for Sunday February 21.
