Sims Named Player of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Appalachian State's Donald Sims has been named the Southern Conference Player of the Week for all games February 9-15 the league office announced Tuesday (Feb. 16).  Sims averaged 27.5 points and shot better than 70 percent from the field last week as the Mountaineers earned victories over Davidson (66-56) and Georgia Southern (111-83).  The player of the week is selected by the conference office.

Sims opened the week with 25 points against Davidson and tallied 30 points against Georgia Southern.  He connected on 5-of-7 three-point attempts and was 10-for-10 from the free throw line on the week.  Sims shot 71 percent from the field on 20-of-28 shooting for the week.

Sims became just the 17th player in school history to record 500 points in a single season and ran his consecutive made free throw streak to 28.  He is the first three-time winner of the award this season.

The junior guard leads the conference in scoring with 19.8 points per game.  He leads the nation in free throw shooting, having connected on 96 percent of his attempts from the charity stripe.  Sims leads the league with 3.0 made three-pointers per game and is ninth in the conference in field goal percentage (.484). 

Appalachian State (16-10, 10-4 SoCon) visits South Division leader College of Charleston (17-9, 12-3) Wednesday night. 

Other top performers in the Southern Conference included College of Charleston's Donavan Monroe, The Citadel's Cameron Wells, Elon's Adam Constantine, Furman's Jordan Miller, Georgia Southern's Colby Wohlleb, Samford's Josh Davis, Western Carolina's Brandon Giles and Wofford's Tim Johnson.
