SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Davidson freshman Joe Schafer has been named the first Southern Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week for all matches through February 14 the league office announced Tuesday (Feb. 16). Schafer has compiled a 5-0 record in singles play and has teamed with Eric Noble to earn two wins in doubles play. The Player of the Week is awarded by the conference office.
Schafer earned his first collegiate victory with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Clemson's Gera Boryachinskly at No. 3 singles on Janaury 16. After knocking off Richmond's William Minter (6-4, 6-1) at No. 2 singles, Schafer moved to the top spot in the Wildcats' lineup and has won each of his last three matches, including a 6-0, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Furman's Sawyer Duncan.
A native of Orchard Park, N.Y., Schafer has teamed with Eric Noble at No. 1 doubles for Davidson. They have posted a 2-3 record thus far this season.
The Wildcats (4-2, 0-1 SoCon) return to the court Saturday when they host East Carolina.
Other top performers in the Southern Conference included College of Charleston's Lukas Koncilia, Furman's Sawyer Duncan, Georgia Southern's Juan Manuel Melian Puigventos, Chattanooga's Dam Parfitt and Wofford's Paul Bartholomy.
