SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Elon's Anna Milian has been named the first Southern Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week for all matches through February 14 the league office announced Tuesday (Feb. 16). Milian has compiled a 5-2 record in singles play for the Phoenix and has teamed with Elisa Simonetti for a 5-2 mark in doubles competition. The Player of the Week is awarded by the conference office.
After dropping her first singles match of the year to Wake Forest's Sasha Kulikova (6-1, 6-0) at the No. 1 position, Milian won her next five matches, including a three-set victory over Virginia Tech's Martha Blakely who is ranked No. 96 in the country. Milian's only other singles loss came to North Carolina's Sanaz Marand, ranked No. 25, at No. 1 singles.
The Tortosa, Spain, native has teamed with Simonetti at the No. 1 doubles position for Elon. They knocked off North Carolina's tandem of Jocelyn Ffriend and Haley Hemm who were ranked No. 28. Milian and Simonetti have won their last three matches at No. 1 doubles.
The Phoenix (5-2) visit UNC Wilmington Thursday at 2:30 p.m.
Other top performers in the Southern Conference included College of Charleston's Emma Hayman, Davidson's Teresa Wang, Furman's Jessica Preeg, Georgia Southern's Ali Beavers and Samford's Rebecca Kirven.
