SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Elon's Emerald Graham has been tabbed the Southern Conference Softball Player of the Week, while Furman's Lana Mackey has been honored as the Pitcher of the Week for all games February 12-14. The selections are made by the league office.
Graham, a junior transfer from Newburgh, Ind., led Elon to two victories at the Phoenix Leadoff Classic, hitting .714 with an on-base percentage of .778. In her first at bat in an Elon uniform, Graham hit an RBI single to left center. She followed that with a two-run home run in her second at bat. Graham also collected three putouts and an assist. The Phoenix went on to defeat UNCW, 5-4, in extra innings.
In the 10-8 victory against Virginia, Graham had a three-run hit in the bottom of the first that put Elon ahead 3-0. In the third inning she stole second base and later scored a run. She added an RBI single in Elon's six-run fifth inning and scored another run.
A senior from Perry, Ga., Mackey threw eight innings of relief to earn her first victory of the season as the Paladins edged Charleston Southern 5-4 in nine innings at the Palmetto State Showdown. She struck out 12 batters while scattering four hits. Mackey recorded just two walks and allowed one earned run.
Also receiving nominations for player of the week were College of Charleston's Amanda Lonergan, Furman's Alex Bimonte, UNC Greensboro's Heather Robb, Samford's Alex Adams and Chattanooga's Tiffany Baker.
Also nominated for pitcher of the week were College of Charleston's Alexa Datko, Elon's Pam DelPizzo, Samford's Robyn Harmon and Chattanooga's Brooke Loudermilk.
