Thompson, Wells Named Men's Athletes of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - UNC Greensboro sophomore Joey Thompson and Samford's Patrick Wells have been honored as the Southern Conference Men's Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week for all meets February 5-6. The selections are made by the league's track and field coaches.

A native of Columbia, Md., Thompson placed fourth in his heat of the mile run at the Meyo Invitational in South Bend, Ind. His time of 4:10.05 was seven second better than his previous personal best. Thompson's time also broke the school record and now leads the league in the event by six seconds.

Wells, a senior from Hoover, Ala., matched his indoor personal best in the pole vault with a leap of 16-0 at the Middle Tennessee State Invitational. He took first place and helped Samford to a 1-2-3 finish in the vault for the second straight week.

The Spartans and the Bulldogs return to action Friday when they travel to Clemson, S.C. to compete in the Tiger Paw Invitational.

Other top track performers included:

Chattanooga's Emmanuel Kirwa, a sophomore from Kapsabet, Kenya, who won the 3000m at the Middle Tennessee State Invitational with a time of 8:28.72.

Samford's Cameron Bean, a redshirt senior from Soddy Daisy, Tenn., who took first place in the mile run at the Middle Tennessee State Invitational. His time of 4:17.60 improved his personal record by 13 seconds.
