RALEIGH, N.C. ? UNC Greensboro rallied to pull within two points heading into the final match of the evening, but NC State prevailed in the match to defeat the Spartans, 19-14, on Wednesday evening in Reynolds Coliseum.
The Spartans fell to 5-7 overall on the year, while NC State improved to 6-11 after snapping their four-match losing streak.
With both teams not having a wrestler at 125 pounds, both teams were forced to forfeit so neither received any team points. The first match of the night was at 133 pounds where NC State’s Dale Shull scored a quick takedown and eventually pinned Casey Boyle just 47 seconds into the match.
Ivan Lopouchanski cut the Wolfpack lead to 6-3 as he scored a second period takedown on his way to a 4-1 decision over Scott Norris. In the closest match of the evening, NC State’s Greyson Mills defeated Alejandro Soto-Perez, 12-10, in sudden victory. Trailing 9-5 late in the third period, Mills hit a five-point move to take a one point lead, but Soto-Perez received a point for riding time so they went into overtime. Mills continued to attack in the extra period as he scored a takedown just 15 seconds into overtime to secure the win.
The Wolfpack built their lead to 13-3 as Brett Farina defeated Travis Sheehy by major decision, 15-7. Sheehy actually led 6-2 in the first period, but battled cramps in his leg the rest of the match and Farina was able to take advantage of that. Ray Ward continued NC State’s run as he scored a 7-5 decision over Victor Hojilla.
Byron Sigmon began the Spartan comeback as he defeated Quinton Godley, 5-3, to make the team score, 16-6. Andrew Saunders used four takedowns and three near falls as he dominated Colin Genthert by technical fall, 20-4, to pull UNCG within 16-11.
Ryan Sughrue made it three in a row for the Spartans with his 9-3 win over Christian McClean to make it a two point match heading into the heavyweight match. In the final match, Eloheim Palma scored an early takedown as he went on to defeat Peter Sturgeon, 8-2, and give NC State a 19-14 win.
The Spartans will return to action on Saturday at 7 p.m. as they host VMI in their final Southern Conference dual of the season.
