BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University wrestling won the final seven matches to defeat Davidson 42-8 in Southern Conference action Tuesday night in Varsity Gym.
With the win, ASU moves to 8-10 overall and 2-2 in the SoCon while Davidson drops to 2-14 overall and finishes its SoCon slate at 0-5.
Tony Gravely gave the Apps a quick 3-0 lead when he earned an exciting 12-8 decison over Matt Zarth at 125. Gravely took the quick lead just 12 seconds in with a takedown but Zarth reversed it and eventually took a 7-5 lead heading into the third period. Gravely tied the match just 27 seconds into the third period and added a two-point nearfall and a takedown for the final 12-8 margin. The win was Gravely’s first in nearly two months and his sixth of the year.
Alex Radsky gave the Wildcats a 4-3 lead when he beat Weston Haney 14-3 and Vitaly Radsky added another 17-7 major decision when he beat Chris Collura at 141 pounds.
The Mountaineers pulled away, winning the final seven matches with only one of those matches going the entire seven matches. Savva Kostis started the run with a first period pin over Ben Thompson. Chip Powell added six more points with a forfeit victory at 157.
Kyle Blevins earned a hard fought 10-6 decision over Tyler Mullen at 165. Mullen started fast getting a takedown 45 seconds into the match but Blevins was able to escape. Mullen was able to get another takedown to begin the second period but Blevins tied the score with an escape and a stall point. The Mountaineer junior finally gained control early in the third period with a takedown, and added another takedown with 15 seconds remaining to earn his team leading 20th win of the year.
Carter Downs earned ASU’s second forfeit victory before Austin Trotman pinned Ike Crews at 184 pounds.
Dylan Temple continued with another quick pin, downing Mark Jeevratnam in just 1:34.
Ken Altarac finished the match in a resounding fashion, powering down Davidson’s Charlie Wolff and staying on top to earn his second pin of the year.
The Mountaineers host VMI on Sunday in their final SoCon match of the season at 2 p.m.
