Furman Earns Sweep Tuesday

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Furman women's tennis team defeated UNC Asheville, 7-0, Tuesday afternoon, and Presbyterian, 6-1, Tuesday night in a double-header at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C. 

Against UNC Asheville, the Paladins swept the singles matches, with #84 Monica Arguello defeating Leslie Smith 6-0, 6-0 at number one, and freshman Lauren Kline picking up a 6-2, 6-0 win over Britney Cloer in the second singles spot.  Rookie Michele Stanford posted a 6-3, 6-2 win over Stephanie Schon at number three, while sophomore Susan Bitetti defeated Devon Cavanaugh 6-3, 6-3 at number four.  In the fifth singles spot, junior Jennifer Betts beat Nicole Schon 6-2, 7-5, and freshman Olivia Maurice turned in a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Louise Bottomley at number six.

Furman won two doubles matches to take the doubles point against the Bulldogs.  Kline and Arguello combined for an 8-1 win over S. Schon and Smith at number one doubles, and Maurice and Betts recorded a 9-8(6) victory over Cavanaugh and Bottomley in the second doubles position.  UNC Asheville logged a win in the third doubles spot, with Cloer and N. Schon defeating sophomores Brooke Mosteller and Bitetti 8-5.

The Paladins won five out of six singles matches in the Presbyterian match.  Kline defeated Heather Heusel 6-1, 6-2 at number one singles, and senior Jessica Preeg notched a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Olivia McMillan in the second doubles position.  Stanford had a 6-2, 6-0 win against Cara Caruso at number three, and Betts posted a 6-2, 6-3 victory against Paige Oelke at number four.  Megan Davis had the lone Blue Hose win, taking a 6-2, 7-5 decision over Mosteller in the five singles spot, and Paladin freshman Jenny Porter had a 6-0, 6-2 win against Daryl Thompson at six singles.

Furman swept the doubles matches against the Blue Hose.  Preeg and Stanford won at number one doubles, with an 8-0 victory over Heusel and Oelke, while Bitetti and Arguello combined for an 8-3 win over Davis and Caruso in the second doubles match.  Porter and Mosteller posted an 8-7(5) victory over Virginia Waldron and McMillan in the third doubles spot.

Furman (3-3) will play at Wake Forest on February 20.
