Catamounts Fall at UNC Asheville

UNC Asheville 85, Western Carolina 79 (OT)

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville outscored Western Carolina 12-6 in overtime to claim an 85-79 victory Tuesday night in front of 1,082 fans at Justice Center.  J.P. Primm scored a game-high 26 points for the Bulldogs, including seven of the team's 12 in the extra period. 

With the game tied 73-73, Keaton Cole and Mike Williams both missed shots in the last five seconds of regulation that would have won the game for Western Carolina.

The Bulldogs (6-6, 1-1 Big South) had for players score in double figures, led by Primm's 26 points.  Chris Stephenson poured in 18 points and eight rebounds while Matt Dickey added 17 points, nine boards and six assists.  D.J. Cunningham added 16 points and six rebounds for UNC Asheville. 

Richie Gordon scored a team-high 21 points for the Catamounts (4-10, 0-2 SoCon).  Trey Sumler tallied a season-high 18 points and recorded eight rebounds and five assists in the loss.  It was the third consecutive game that he has scored in double figures.  Senior guard Mike Williams added 15 points for Western Carolina. 

The Catamounts shot 45 percent (34-of-75) from the field and pulled down 43 rebounds.  UNC Asheville connected on 46 percent (29-62) of its shots from the floor and recorded 45 rebounds.  The Bulldogs made 24-of-36 (.667) free throws while WCU was just 8-of-16 (.500) from the charity stripe.  The Catamount bench outscored UNC Asheville, 9-4.

Western Carolina held a 30-29 lead at halftime.

The Catamounts have lost their last six games and will return to action January 5 when they travel to face Georgia Southern at 7:00 p.m.
