NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Southern Conference had four players named Walter Camp Football Foundation All-Americans. All four players were named to the defensive unit, including three along the defensive line. Appalachian State's Jabari Fletcher, Georgia Southern's Brent Russell and Wofford's Ameet Pall all earned All-America honors on defensive line, while ASU's Mark LeGree became a three-time All-American at defensive back. The team was selected by the head coaches and sports information directors of the Football Championship Subdivision schools and certified by the accounting and auditing firm, Marcum LLP.
Fletcher, a 6-3, 265-pound senior, led the Mountaineers with nine sacks (good for a tie for 13th nationally) and 16.5 tackles for loss (tied for 19th nationally) this season. He was twice named SoCon Player of the Week and was also recognized as the conference's October Player of the Month. With 22 sacks and 44.5 tackles for loss in his career, Fletcher is one of only seven players in ASU history to register 20 sacks and 40 tackles for loss in a career.
Russell, a first-team All-Southern Conference pick on defense, is tied for 32nd nationally in tackles for loss with 17.5 for 88 yards and ranked 42nd nationally with seven sacks. Russell leads the 10-4 Eagles in both categories.
Pall, a junior from Montreal, Quebec, helped anchor Wofford's defense which is ranked second in the SoCon and is eighth in the nation. He had 12.5 sacks this season, which is the fourth most in school history and is ranked eighth the nation. He also ranks eighth nationally with 1.73 tackles for loss per game and his 22.5 tackles for loss are the third most in a single season at Wofford.
He is only the fourth player in school history to earn a spot on the Walter Camp All-America team and the first since 2004 when Eric Deutsch and Lee Basinger were honored. Pall is also the lone Canadian on this year's Walter Camp All-America squad.
LeGree is the first defensive player to ever earn FCS all-America recognition three times from the Walter Camp Foundation. He joins New Hampshire wide receiver David Ball (2004-06) and UNH quarterback Ricky Santos (2005-07) as the only three-time Walter Camp all-Americans since the organization began selecting an FCS team in 1987.
A 6-0, 200-pound senior, LeGree finished his career as the active leader in NCAA Division I with 22 career interceptions, four more than any other FCS or FBS player active in 2010. The 22 interceptions are good for second in Southern Conference history and third in ASU's all-time annals. Despite opposing offenses steering away from the ball-hawking safety for much of the year, LeGree picked off five passes a senior, good for a tie for 20th nationally. He also broke up eight passes and made 49 tackles in his final collegiate campaign.
In all, players from 12 different conferences and 24 institutions were represented on the 2010 Walter Camp FCS All-America team. The Big Sky and Southern Conferences had the most selections with four selections each. The Colonial Athletic Association and Missouri Valley Conference each had three.
Walter Camp, "The Father of American Football," first selected an All-America team in 1889. Camp - a former Yale University athlete and football coach - is also credited with developing play from scrimmage, set plays, the numerical assessment of goals and tries and the restriction of play to 11 men per side. The Walter Camp Football Foundation - a New Haven based all-volunteer group - was founded in 1967 to perpetuate the ideals of Camp and to continue the tradition of selecting All-America teams for the Football Bowl and Championship subdivisions.
