Media Tabs Samford as Preseason Favorite

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Members of the Southern Conference media selected Samford as the preseason favorite to win the SoCon women's basketball regular season title in 2010-11, reflecting the decision made by the league coaches. The Bulldogs are looking to become the first regular season champion other than Chattanooga in the last 12 years.

Samford received 10 of 16 first-place votes and 168 total points. The Bulldogs were regular season and conference tournament runners-up last season.

Appalachian State received three first-place votes and 153 total points to finish second in the polling.  The Mountaineers ended last season by winning the inaugural Women's Basketball Invitational.

Chattanooga received the final three first-place votes and 152 total points to come in third.  The Lady Mocs have won 11 consecutive regular season SoCon championships.

College of Charleston (115) was selected to finish fourth followed by Georgia Southern (105) at fifth.  Davidson (93) came in at sixth, while Elon (84) was picked seventh and Western Carolina (73) was chosen to finish eighth in the conference.

UNCG (54), Wofford (32) and Furman (27) rounded out the poll, picked to finish ninth, 10th and 11th respectively.

The Southern Conference women's basketball season begins Friday, November 12 with nine teams taking the court. All 11 teams will begin by Nov. 15. The 2011 Southern Conference Tournament will be held March 3-7 in Chattanooga, Tenn.
