UNCG defeats Northern Illinois, falls to No. 24 Indiana, Old Dominion

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - UNCG went 1-2 on the day as it fell in its first dual of the day to No. 24 Indiana, but rebounded with a come-from-behind win against Northern Illinois before nearly replicating the same feat against Old Dominion at the Hoosier Duals on Saturday.

The Spartans (1-5) began their day with a 34-12 loss to Indiana (6-0) and found themselves losing to North Illinois (2-1), 15-6, but rallied to win the final five matches to win the match 21-15. UNCG once again found itself down against Old Dominion (1-4) as the Spartans trailed 20-3 with four matches left, but this time they fell short and lost to the Monarchs, 20-18.

The individual highlight of the afternoon for UNCG came at 149 pounds as sophomore Ivan Lopouchanski, who is ranked 16th-nationally, continued to show why he is one of the best in his weight class nationally. He went 3-0 in the three duals, including a 6-2 win against Indiana's Kurt Kinser, who is currently ranked No. 6 in the nation at 149 pounds.

Another top performance for the Spartans came from their other ranked wrestler Andrew Saunders, who is ranked No. 15 at 184 pounds. He also went a perfect 3-0 on the afternoon.

Three other upper weights, Byron Sigmon (174 pounds), Caylor Williams (197 pounds) and Peter Sturgeon (285 pounds) all went 2-1. Sigmon scored a pin in the first overtime against Old Dominion and a decision victory against North Illinois, with his only loss coming in sudden victory against Indiana.

Williams lost his only match of the day against No. 18 Matt Powless from Indiana before coming back to win his final two matches of the day, 6-2 and 7-2, respectively.

Sturgeon mirrored Williams' success as he lost his first match to No. 18 Rickey Alcala from Indiana, 3-2, but rebounded with a pin against Northern Illinois to secure the Spartan win. Sturgeon nearly completed the comeback again for UNCG against Old Dominion as he almost had a pin in a third period scramble against Old Dominion, but settled for a 3-1 sudden victory win.

The Spartans return to competition on Friday as they head out west to Las Vegas as they compete at the prestigious Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational for a two-day individual tournament.

UTC Splits a Pair of Matches in Iowa

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team split a pair of dual matches at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, tonight.  The Mocs opened with a 35-3 win over the host Rams, but fell to No. 7 Iowa 47-0.

Chattanooga won nine of 10 matches in the opener against Cornell College.  Sophomore Prescott Garner (West Linn, Ore.) improved to 10-3 on the year with a pin over Jordan Ng at 125.  The Rams made the team score 6-3 when Michael Buhr answered with a 6-1 decision over freshman Cody Hood (Harrison, Tenn.) at 133.  Those were the only points UTC would surrender in the match.  Sophomore Robert Prigmore (Southlake, Texas) added a pin against Robert Widmer at 197 as UTC evened its overall record to 4-4 on the year.

The seventh-ranked Hawkeyes rolled out eight ranked wrestlers and dominated the match with the Mocs.  UTC was competitive in two matches, including Garner's bout with the top-ranked Matt McDonough at 125.  Garner avoided bonus points, falling 7-1 to the top competitor in the nation in his class.  Garner has face four top-10 opponents in his 13 matches on the year.

UTC's 17th-ranked Jason McCroskey (Soddy Daisy, Tenn.) battled hard against No. 7 Grant Gambrall at 184.  He was unable to mount any offense but still kept it close in a 4-0 loss.

UTC (4-5) will take a break from competition until after final exams.  The next match on the schedule is at Stanford on Dec. 17.  UTC will also compete in the Reno Tournament of Champions before the Christmas break.
