SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Southern Conference Sports Media Association selected its SoCon Football All-Conference Teams and Specialty Awards for the 2010 season. Appalachian State's DeAndre Presley was named the Roy M. "Legs" Offensive Player of the Year, while Wofford junior defensive lineman Ameet Pall was tabbed the Defensive Player of the Year. Chattanooga defensive back Kadeem Wise earned the Freshman of the Year Award, while Wofford's Mike Ayers took home the Wallace Wade Coach of the Year Honor.
Presley guided the Mountaineers to a 9-2 record this season, including a 7-1 mark in league play. Appalachian State earned at least a share of the league's regular season conference championship for the sixth consecutive season. Presley finished the year with 2,976 passing yards and 753 yards on the ground. He finished the regular season completing 63 percent of his passes and ranked ninth in the nation in passer efficiency (148.3). Presley is 13th in the country in total offense. He was named the league's Offensive Player of the Week four times this season. It is the fourth time in the last six years that an Appalachian State quarterback has earned the media's Offensive Player of the Year Award.
Pall was one of the standouts on a staunch Wofford defense in 2010. He finished the regular season ranked fifth in the nation in sacks, with an average of 1.1 sacks per contest. His mark of 1.77 tackles for loss per game is good for seventh-best in the nation. The Terriers limited their opponents to just 19.0 points per game this season and held them to just 148 yards per game through the air and 127 on the ground. Pall recorded 47 tackles, which included 19.5 for loss to go with his 12.5 sacks. He is the first Terrier to win the Defensive Player of the Year Award, as voted on by the media, since Matt Nelson in 2003.
Wise was tabbed the league's Freshman of the Year. He played in all 11 games for the Mocs this season and finished his freshman campaign with 29 tackles, six interceptions and six pass break-ups. A native of Lawrenceville, Ga., he intercepted two passes at Western Carolina on September 25 and is just the second Moc to earn the Freshman of the Year Award from the SoCon Sports Media Association.
After being picked to finish fifth in the league during the preseason by the media, Mike Ayers led the Terriers to a 9-2 mark overall and a 7-1 finish in the Southern Conference. The Terriers earned a share of the league's regular season conference championship, and earned a bid to the NCAA FCS Playoffs. A four-time winner of the Coach of the Year Award presented by the league's media, Ayers previously won the Wallace Wade Coach of the Year Award in 2000, 2002 and 2003.
Appalachian State placed 13 players on the all-conference team, including nine first-team selections. Chattanooga had seven players earn all-conference honors while Elon, Furman, Georgia Southern and Samford all placed six on the all-conference teams.
