Appalachian State's Dewart Named Player of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Appalachian State forward Ashlen Dewart has been selected the Southern Conference women's basketball player of the week for all games played November 16-22.

The sophomore from Spartanburg, S.C., shot an impressive .750 percent (24 for 32) from the field over the past week to lead the Mountaineers to a 2-1 record.  In Appalachian State lone loss on the week against Richmond, Dewart scored 12 points and had two rebounds.  She picked up her play against East Tennessee State as she registered 14 points, hauled in four rebounds, swatted two blocks and contributed with an assist.  To cap off the week against Gardner-Webb, Dewart tied a career-best with 34 points and also hauled in a game-high 11 rebounds.  It was the forward's six career double-double and second on the season.

The 34 points for Dewart tied her career-best that came last season at Bowling Green and re-ties her record for the 10th most points scored in a single game in Mountaineer program history.  Her showing helped Appalachian State extend its home winning streak to nine games and capture its first home-opener since the 2007-08 season.  It was also Appalachian State's first-ever win over Gardner-Webb, and earned head coach Darcie Vincent her 300th career victory.

Dewart and the Mountaineers have a week off before hosting Southern Conference foe Elon in the conference opener for both teams on Nov. 29.

Other top performers in the opening week of play were Chattanooga's Whitney Hood, Davidson's Sophia Aleksandravicius, Elon's Ali Ford, Furman's Kelly O'Conner, Georgia Southern's Jamie Navarro, UNCG's Monique Floyd, Samford's Savannah Hill, Western Carolina's Emily Clarke and Wofford's Mahagony WIlliams.
