Spartans fall to No. 4 Wisconsin, 34-12
GREENSBORO, N.C. - UNCG's wrestling team held an early 12-6 lead on No. 4 Wisconsin, but saw the Badgers win the final six bouts to earn a 34-12 comeback win on Friday in the Spartans' home-opener.
UNCG (0-1) got a 14-8 win from Manny Ramirez over Shane McQuade at 125 to start things off, energizing the crowd of approximately 500 fans that packed into Fleming Gymnasium. Ramirez held a narrow 7-6 lead after the second period but dominated the third, scoring a trio of takedowns and piling up more than two minutes of riding time for the extra point and the 3-0 team lead after one match.
UW (1-0) took a 6-3 lead after the 133-pound bout, as Tyler Graff, ranked No. 3 in the nation in his weight class, pinned UNCG's Jamel Johnson with just five seconds remaining in the opening period.
UNCG countered with six points of its own in the night's third match, with Michael Crowley pinning Danny Arnel at the 4:42 mark at 141 pounds. Crowley held a commanding 10-4 lead prior to the pin and managed to put Arnel away with just 18 seconds left in the second period.
One of the highlights of the evening was the 149-pound bout, which saw UNCG's 17th-ranked Ivan Lopouchanski take a 9-7 decision over No. 16 Cole Schmitt of Wisconsin. The pair locked horns in a back-and-forth match that went down to the wire, but Lopouchanski scored a takedown with about 20 seconds to go to open up a little breathing room. Schmitt picked up a point with an escape in the waning seconds, but Lopouchanski held on for the win.
That was the last match UNCG would win, however, as the Badgers rattled off 28 straight points over the next six bouts.
Shawn Perry got things rolling for Wisconsin at 157, pinning UNCG's Cody Rodebaugh with just 38 seconds left in the third period to tie the match at 12. That contest was a close one, as Perry held just a 4-0 advantage going into the third period.
Defending national champion and top-ranked Andrew Howe picked up another fall at 165, pinning Travis Sheehy at the 6:12 mark to make it 18-12 in Wisconsin's favor. No. 19 Ben Jordan followed with an 8-0 major decision over UNCG's Byron Sigmon at 174.
The 184 match was the second of the evening to feature two ranked wrestlers squaring off, and Wisconsin's 12th-ranked Travis Rutt earned a hard-fought, 8-6 win over No. 16 Andrew Saunders of UNCG. Saunders rallied back from a 7-3 deficit in the third period to make it 7-6, but couldn't complete the comeback.
Second-ranked Trevor Brandvold made it 31-12 in Wisconsin's favor with a pin at 197, getting the fall over UNCG's Caylor Williams at 2:22.
In the evening's final bout, UNCG's Peter Sturgeon gave No. 14 Eric Bugenhagen all he could handle but ultimately fell by a 3-2 score.
"It was a great match," UNCG coach Jason Loukides said. "Our home crowd was great. I was really happy to see that many fans come out to support us. Wisconsin, ranked No. 4 in the country, is a big test for some of our guys, especially a learning experience for the young guys."
UNCG doesn't get much time to recover, as it returns to action Sunday at the ACC Challenge in Chapel Hill, N.C. There, the Spartans will face No. 19 Virginia Tech and the host North Carolina Tar Heels in duals at 1 and 3 p.m., respectively.

Ellsworth Leads Keydet Weekend with 5th-Place Finish at Keystone Classic
LEXINGTON, Va./PHILADELPHIA, Pa.-The VMI wrestling team had 17 cadet-athletes in action this weekend, Nov. 20-21, as six freshman competed at the nearby Washington & Lee Fall Classic, while five other freshman and six upperclassmen took part in the prestigious Keystone Classic in Philadelphia, Pa. Josh Phillips had a perfect 2-0 record at W&L at 184 lbs., while senior Ronnie Ellsworth earned a 4-2 ledger to take 5th-place at the Keystone Classic.
Phillips was the lone Keydet to compete at W&L and earn the 2-0 mark, as he defeated East Tennessee State University's James Hagan in the opening round with a 7-0 shutout. In the second round, he was matched up against VMI teammate Jacob Vahle, who he pinned at the 1:48 mark of the first period to secure the victory.
Vahle, along with fellow rookie Charles Gray, were the other Keydets to pick up wins on the afternoon. Prior to falling to Phillips in the second round, he knocked off ETSU's Hagan by pinfall, while Clark, competing against ETSU's Ian McKinley, picked up with pinfall at the 2:21 mark.
In Philadelphia at the Keystone Classic, Ellsworth lead the way for the second-straight week, as the senior won four matches competing at his customary 197 lbs. weight class. He began his tournament as the No. 4 seed at the weight, and defeated Brown's Brandon Schull by a 5-2 decision in his first win. After being pinned by Edinboro's Shawn Fendone at the 3:42 mark of the second period. Ellsworth then rattled off a pair of decision victories over Brian Self of Duke (8-5) and Chris Spagnola of Rider (5-3). Following a 4-0 setback to Northwestern's John Schoen, he once again knocked off Schull of Brown 4-3 in the 5th-place match by a 4-3 count.
Freshman Juan Adams, along with Ellsworth, also impressed, compiling a 2-2 record on the afternoon as each of his wins came via pinfall. After falling in his first match of the day to Boston University's Kevin Inniss 7-4, he rebounded with a pair of pins over Brown's Caleby Blaney at the 6:34 mark and Princeton's Robert Grogan at the 2:52 mark. He then dropped his final match of the afternoon to Liberty's John Pelletier, as he was defeated via pinfall at the 5:55 mark.

VMI will take part in its first dual meet of the season after a weekend off on Sat., Dec 4 in Lancaster, Pa., squaring off against Franklin & Marshall University at noon. The next day, the team will head to the Nittany Lion Open, hosted by Penn State in an all-day event.
Three Place in Wrestling at Keystone Classic
PHILADELPHIA, Pa.- Appalachian State University wrestling (3-0) placed three wrestlers in the top five at the annual Keystone Classic held in the historical Palestra on Sunday afternoon in Philadelphia, Pa.
Redshirt junior Austin Trotman had the best day on the mat for the Mountaineers in the 184-pound weight class. Trotman earned a number-two seed entering the competition. The reigning-SoCon Wrestler of the Year tallied a technical fall against Edinboro's Kenneth Massey in his opening round and then earned two straight major decisions against Harrison Cook of Penn, 10-2 and Northwestern's Aaron Jones, 11-3 to set up a final with the number one-seed Scott Giffin of Penn.
Trotman was down 3-0 entering the final set and got on the board with an escape, but was taken down. He then responded with an escape and takedown of his own to tighten the gap to 5-4. Trotman allowed Giffin to escape again and Giffin claimed the decision over Trotman, 6-4 to give him the 184 title.
Junior Kyle Blevins also had a good day as he earned decisions in two close matches. In Blevins' first outing, he defeated Frank Miele of Rider, 4-1 and earned a decision over Boston's Kyle Czarnecki, 3-0. After rattling off back-to-back decisions, Blevins' was stopped by Rider's Jim Resnick, 7-5, sending him into the consolation round.
