SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Three Southern Conference football teams earned invites to the 2010 Division I FCS Playoffs the NCAA announced today (November 21). The league's co-champions, Appalachian State and Wofford along with Georgia Southern all earned berths to the postseason.
Georgia Southern (7-4, 5-3 SoCon) will host South Carolina State Saturday, November 27. The winner will travel to face No. 2 seeded William & Mary (8-3) on December 4. The Eagles will make their first playoff appearance since 2005. Winners of six national championships, Georgia Southern is making its 17th appearance in the postseason and owns a 38-10 record.
Appalachian State (9-2, 7-1 SoCon) won the conference's automatic bid to the postseason by virtue of a victory over Wofford November 13. The Mountaineers earned the No. 1 overall seed in the field. Western Illinois and Coastal Carolina will square off November 27 with the winner advancing to take on ASU in Boone, N.C., on December 4. It is Appalachian State's sixth consecutive trip to the postseason. The Mountaineers won three consecutive national titles from 2005-07 and boast an all-time mark of 23-14 in the NCAA playoffs.
The Terriers earned a first-round bye and will travel to face Jacksonville State (9-2) on Saturday, December 4. The Terriers (9-2, 7-1 SoCon) return to the postseason after missing the playoffs in 2009. The Terriers made postseason trips in 2003, 2007 and 2008.
Southern Conference teams own a record of 89-52 (.631) in the NCAA playoffs, the best mark among FCS Conferences.
