WCU Women's Soccer Earns NSCAA Team Academic Award for Fifth Straight Year
Highest ranking SoCon Team with a 3.53 Team GPA
CULLOWHEE, N.C. - For the fifth straight year, Western Carolina women's soccer received the NSCAA (National Soccer Coaches Association of America) Team Academic Award with a 3.53 team GPA.
The Catamounts are tied for 25th nationally out of over 990 programs eligible for the award from DIV I, II, III soccer programs. Western Carolina ranked in the top 11 out of 322 Div I programs awarded and the highest placing team in the Southern Conference with their cumulative team GPA of 3.53 with UNCG in second at 3.27.
"This is a tremendous team achievement and something the girls and I take a lot of pride in," said Head Women's Soccer Coach Chad Miller. "This award is one of our team goals every year and is one of my favorites because it is a reflection of the entire group. We talk about academics all the time and hold the girls in the program to a high standard, so it always nice to be recognized for the work they do off the field. This award is a direct reflection of the people we have in our program and the academic support personal we have here at WCU."
To earn the NSCAA Team Academic Award, teams must post at least a 3.0 GPA for the academic year.
Spartans earn NSCAA Team Academic Award
KANSAS CITY, Kan. - UNCG's 10th-ranked women's soccer team earned the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's Team Academic Award for the ninth straight season, the NSCAA announced Wednesday.
Coach Eddie Radwanski's squad turned in a grade point average of 3.27 for the 2009-10 academic year to take the distinction. Seven Spartans earned Academic All-Southern Conference honors in 2009-10, including Kelly Attayek, Nicole Danford, Casey Godwin, Kelsey Kearney, Lauren Lopez, Heather Mitrisin and Jenn Partenheimer. Attayek and Lopez earned CoSIDA ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III honors, while Lopez and Partenheimer were NSCAA Scholar All-Region picks.
UNCG went 19-2-1 overall and 11-0-0 in the Southern Conference this season, setting numerous school records along the way. The Spartans turned in the most wins and fewest losses in school history, in addition to running off a school-record 16-game winning streak. UNCG won its fifth straight SoCon regular-season title, its seventh SoCon tournament title, made its ninth NCAA tournament appearance and picked up a top-10 national ranking for the first time since 1996.
To earn the NSCAA Team Academic Award, teams must post at least a 3.0 GPA for the academic year. UNCG was one of 436 women's teams across all divisions to earn the honor, which it has done in each of Radwanski's seasons at the helm.
Elon Soccer Teams Honored for Academics by NSCAA
KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) has awarded both the Elon men's and women's soccer squads one of its highest team accolades. The Phoenix programs have both been named one of 630 recipients of the NSCAA Team Academic Award for the 2009-10 academic year. Elon was one of just 125 institutions nationally to have both its men's and women's programs earn the honor this year.
The Team Academic Award is presented to programs which boast a minimum of a team GPA of 3.0 the previous academic year. This award is given for the 2009-10 academic year during which the women's squad recorded a 3.26 GPA and the men's program a 3.06 GPA. This is the 10th time that the Elon women's program has claimed this honor (1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010). The men have now been recognized in back-to-back years.
Of the 630 combined teams recognized, 436 were women's teams and 194 men's programs.
