SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Appalachian State guard Sam Ramirez opened the 2010-11 basketball weekend by setting a new career-high in points and has been selected the Southern Conference women's basketball player of the week for all games November 12-15.
The senior from Fayetteville, N.C., scored 48 points in two games over the weekend, including a career-high 28 on 10-16 shooting in an 84-67 win over in-state Campbell. Ramirez shot a strong 6-9 from three-point range, and scored 23 of her 28 points in the first half of action. She also recorded four assists, four rebounds and one steal against the Camels.
In Appalachian State's season-opener against Marshall, Ramirez scored a game-high 20 points, shooting 7-15 from the field. In the 64-55 win over the Thundering Herd, Ramirez also had two assists and four steals.
Up next for Ramirez and the Mountaineers is a two-game road trip to face Richmond and East Tennessee State before returning home to play Gardner-Webb.
Other top performers in the opening week of play were Chattanooga's Whitney Hood, Davidson's Sophia Aleksandravicius, Elon's Kelsey Evans, Georgia Southern's Jamie Navarro, UNCG's Monique Floyd, Samford's Emily London and Western Carolina's Kaila'Shea Menendez.
