CHARLESTON, S.C. - The College of Charleston volleyball team finished the regular season by avenging a previous loss to Furman and picking up their 12th straight conference win with a 3-0 victory against the Paladins Sunday at Carolina First Arena (25-15, 25-23, 25-22).
Prior to the match the Cougars (27-5, 15-1) honored their four seniors, who now have a combined record of 98-33 and finished 2010 with a regular season Southern Conference Championship.
Junior Elyse Chubb continued her dominance as she reached the .500 hitting percentage mark for the second consecutive game with 13 kills and a .526 hitting efficiency.
Playing in their final match at home the seniors shined on the court. Ginny Phillips totaled 11 kills and Whitney Russell added eight. Cole Dawley guided the offensive attack with 42 assists.
The Cougars hit over .300 for each set and finished at .333 compared to Furman (17-11, 11-5) at .283.
Having finished the regular season, the Cougars will play in the Southern Conference Tournament Nov. 19-21 on the campus of Appalachian State University. The Cougars will play Friday at 12:30 p.m. against Samford.
Wofford 3, The Citadel 0
Charleston, S.C. - The Citadel Volleyball completed their 2010 season with a loss at McAlister Field House to in-state foe Wofford by scores of 25-15, 25-14 and 25-16. The match also marked the first graduating class of Head Coach Carolyn Geiger, which included Amanda Beal, Shannon Frain, Tatum Jestila, Jessica Maas and Blaine McAllister.
The Bulldogs (7-21, 1-15 SoCon) were led in kills by Kaona Mercer, who tallied 10. She was joined up front by Maas (four kills), Jestila (three kills) and McAllister (three kills). Jestila was a force on the defensive side with 11 digs, while Maas finished with eight. Sophomore Meredith Mutispaugh dished out a team-high nine assists, followed closely by Erin Bucherl who finished with seven.
Outside hitter Rachel Woodlee led the Terriers with 10 kills and was one of four players to eclipse a .300 hitting percentage. Wofford finished with 39 team kills and a .308 attack percentage due in large part to Arden Anderson (.455 attack pct.) and Catelyn Amende (.444 attack pct.). The back row was sparked by the play of Reagan Styles, who finished with 13 digs. Woodlee finished one dig shy of a double-double, totaling nine in the match. The combination of Bekah Dorsey and Tara Gough made for 26 of the team's 34 assists. Wofford finishes the season at 13-21 overall and 3-13 in SoCon play.
Wofford took advantage of four kills from Woodle and nine Bulldog attack errors to capture the early 25-15 win. The Dogs responded early in the second set, jumping out to a two-point lead, before five consecutive Terrier points pushed the score to 7-4. Wofford managed 13 of the next 18 points to assume a 20-9 advantage. The Terriers closed out the match by taking advantage of three attack errors for the 25-14 victory.
The two teams battled throughout the opening stages of the third set with Wofford having an early 7-4 cushion. A series of kills by Maas and Mercer, combined with a Farrell service ace, kept the Bulldogs within striking distance at 13-8. With a three-point advantage, Amende's service game accounted for the next four straight points to extend the lead to 19-13. The Cadets scored three points down the final stretch for the 25-16 Wofford win.
