Alex Radsky Leads Davidson Wrestling at NC State Open

RALEIGH, N.C. - Senior Alex Radsky led Davidson wrestling with a 4-2 record for the day at the NC State Open Sunday at Reynolds Coliseum.

Radsky (Worthington, Ohio) was relegated to the 133-pound consolation bracket after losing his opening match to Brian Bokoski of the Carolina Wrestling Club, 6-3, but he went on to win his next four with a pin, a major decision and a pair of decisions, including a 6-1 decision over UNCG's Angel Garcia. UNCG's Eric Chandler ended Radsky's bid to reach the third-place match though, with an 11-8 decision.

Junior Tyler Mullen (Westminster, Md.) finished the day at 2-2, wrestling at 165 pounds. Mullen suffered an 11-3 major decision loss to UNCG's Travis Sheehy, but picked up a pair decisions over Kenny Lindsay of UNC Pembroke (7-1) and Joel Caudill of Campbell (3-2) before losing to Duke's David Henry, 3-1.

Sophomore Matt Zarth (125 pounds), sophomore Scott Ray (141), freshman Scott Patrick (174), sophomore Ike Crews (184) and senior Charlie Wolff (285) all went 1-2 for the day. Junior Jorge Estrada also competed but did not win either of his two matches.

Davidson will next host the Davidson Open Saturday December 4.

 

UNCG Trio claim individual titles at NC State Open

RALEIGH, N.C. - Ivan Lopouchanski, Manny Ramirez and Andrew Saunders all claimed individual titles in their respective weight classes and six other Spartans finished in fourth place or better to lead UNCG on Sunday at the NC State Open.

Lopouchanski, who is ranked 20th in the nation at 149 pound, repeated as champion after winning the 141-pound title at the NC State Open last season. He began his day with a pair of 16-0 technical falls before receiving an injury default to advance to the finals. In the finals, he scored a 4-2 decision against Duke's AJ Guardado to finish in first place.

Ramirez had an impressive day at 125 pounds as he started with a 5-4 decision against NC State's Mike Moreno. He then recorded a 20-6 major decision in the quarterfinals before scoring a 25-10 technical fall against NC State's Dustin Champion. He found himself pitted up against another NC State wrestler in the finals, but once again came out victorious with a 21-8 major decision against Pedram Rahmatabadi.

16th-ranked Saunders enjoy success as he pinned The Citadel's Andrew Dempsey in his first match of the day in just 1:01. He followed that up with a 10-4 decision in the semifinals before scoring a pin against Duke's Deigo Bencomo at the 1:50 mark to win the 184-pound title.

Jamel Johnson also advanced to the finals at 133 pounds, but dropped a 3-1 decision to earn runner-up honors.

Eric Chandler, Byron Sigmon, Peter Sturgeon and Caylor Williams all finished in third place for the Spartans too, while Travis Sheehy came home in fourth place.

The Spartans will begin the dual portion of their schedule on Friday as they host No. 4 Wisconsin at 7 p.m. in Fleming Gymnasium.

ASU Wrestling Sweeps Mountaineer Duals

BOONE, N.C.- Appalachian State University wrestling (3-0) swept the Mountaineer Duals defeating Anderson, Belmont Abbey and Gardner-Webb on Sunday in Varsity Gym.

Sophomore Tony Gravely (Martinsville, Va./Magna Vista) got Appalachian on the board first by scoring a major decision over Anderson's Andrew Rankin, 17-7 at 125. Freshman Chris Johnson (Hillsborough, N.C./Orange), juniors Kyle Benson (Morganton, N.C./Robert L. Patton) and Savva Kostis (Boone, N.C./Watauga) also earned decisions over Trojans before juniors Travis Puckett (Matthews, N.C./David W. Butler) and Kyle Blevins (Sapulpa, Okla./Sapulpa) tallied back-to-back major decisions over Nicholas Giulietti, 10-2 and Jordan Lide, 12-3 to keep the Black and Gold on pace. Freshman Branden Lietz (Greenville, N.C./J.H. Rose) and junior Carter Downs (Tequesta, Fla./Jupiter Christian) also notched decisions before reigning SoCon Wrestler of the Year Austin Trotman (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mount Tabor) recorded a major decision over Zoi Ouellette, 10-2 at 197 pounds. The Apps were clicking on all cylinders going into the heavyweight division before freshman Marc Tyson (Monroe, N.J./Monroe Township) dropped a close bout to Chase Duke, 1-2. The Mountaineers defeated Anderson 31-3 to begin their morning on the mat.

ASU then took on Gardner-Webb and Belmont Abbey to end their day. Sophomore Brett Boston (Morganton, N.C./Freedom) took over at 125 and scored the fall over Gardner-Webb's Brett Kostern in 5:18 and earned a decision over Belmont Abbey's Shane Summerlin, 6-4. Junior Mike Kessler (Bay City, Mich./Western) went 1-1 on the afternoon after losing a close bout to Richie Spicel of Gardner-Webb, 0-4, but bounced back to score the major decision over Belmont Abbey's Will James, 8-0.

After earning a major decision in his first match of the morning, Blevins came back and scored a technical fall over Gardner-Webb's Erin O'Dell, 23-7 in 7:45, but faced a tougher opponent in Belmont Abbey's Jake Varilek. It came down to the last set, but Blevins defeated Varilek, 2-0.

Kostis earned the Apps' other technical fall of the afternoon when he took down Belmont Abbey's David Saley, 17-2 in 4:15.

Appalachian took down the Runnin' Bulldogs, 32-9 and finished off the Crusaders, 27-6 to close the event.

The Mountaineers take their momentum into Philadelphia, Pa. as they take part in the Keystone Classic on Sunday, Nov. 21.

Bulldog Grapplers Wrap Up Action at Hershey Duals

Hershey, Pa. - The Citadel Wrestling team went 1-3 in action at Hersheypark Arena in the Hershey Duals. J.C. Oddo and Turotgokh Luvsandorj each went 3-1 on the day and scored upsets against nationally ranked competition to lead the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs (1-3) started their dual action off against the reigning ACC Champions in No. 24 Virginia. The Cavaliers (6-0) won eight of the ten matches en route to a 32-6 win, but Derek Royster scored one of the big upsets of the day at 149 pounds when he upended No. 19 Derek Valenti, 6-4, for a sudden victory overtime win. Luvsandorj also scored a sudden victory win when he downed UVA's Conner Miller, 6-5.

In the next dual, Drexel was able to slip past The Citadel, 21-15. The Bulldogs won three matches including a forfeit win awarded to Tyler Sim at 125 pounds, a pin at 184 pounds by Kelby Smith and a 5-1 decision at 174 pounds by Oddo. Drexel won four of their seven decisions by just a single point to take the team win.

In the opening afternoon dual, the Bulldogs pushed No. 17 Virginia Tech, before ultimately falling, 24-15. The Hokies (4-1) won all five matches in the lower weight classes, while the Bulldogs won four of five of the heavy weight classes. Luvsandorj was able to score another national upset for The Citadel as he upended No. 20 Nick Epperly, 5-4. Oddo scored his second win of the day, while Justin Sparrow earned his first win of the duals by ousting VT's John Dickson, 8-2. True freshman Luke Johnson picked up his first collegiate dual win via forfeit at heavyweight.

The Citadel was finally able to breakthrough with a win in the final dual of the day when they won seven matches en route to defeating George Mason (0-4), 33-10. Sim won his second match of the day via forfeit at 125 pounds. Richard Alarcon and Jordan Dix scored their first wins of the day at 133 and 141 pounds, respectively. Pierre Frazile was also able to score his first win in the duals with a 13-4 major decision of GMU's Ty Knepp at 157 pounds. Luvsandorj and Oddo both collected their third wins of the day, while Sparrow rounded out the Bulldog scoring by earning a forfeit win.

Mocs Post Two Wins in McKenzie Arena

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team posted a pair of wins in its home opener in McKenzie Arena today.  The Mocs defeated a solid Liberty squad 26-16 in the first match.  The Flames downed Cumberland 40-3 in the neutral contest before UTC defeated the Bulldogs 42-6 in the final bout of the day. 

"Two big wins including one against Liberty, who is a tough team," stated head coach Heath Eslinger.  "We lost some close individual matches so we are going to have to work on those, but we are competing hard and I am pleased with the effort."

Chattanooga (2-1) had a tough outing against the visiting Flames (4-2).  Sophomore Prescott Garner (West Linn, Ore.) started things off with a pin at 125 to give UTC a 6-0 lead.  Mocs freshman Cody Hood dropped his 133 contest to Joe Pantaleo 9-0, but senior Cody Cleveland put UTC back up 10-4 with a 12-4 major decision over Seth Hicks at 141.

Liberty tied the team score at 10 when Scoot Clymer pinned sophomore Dean Pavlou at 149.  A 12-3 major decision at 157 by sophomore Josh Condon and a pin by Brandon Wright at 164 gave the Mocs a 20-10 lead through six matches.    

Junior Jason McCroskey (184) and senior Matt Lettner (285) also posted wins in the final four matches to give Chattanooga the victory in front of nearly 500 fans in McKenzie Arena. 

Chattanooga dominated its match with Cumberland, posting wins in eight contests.  The Mocs were cruising with a 24-3 lead before James Casadaban defeated freshman Levi Clemons 10-3 at 174.  UTC went on to slam the door on any thoughts of a comeback by posting first-quarter pins in each of the last three matches. 

"Matt Lettner did a great job today," added Eslinger.  "He is a senior and a leader on our team who does everything right.  Two big wins, including one against a tough heavyweight from Liberty.  He has worked hard and we are glad to see him having the success he deserves." 

Chattanooga hits the road next weekend to face Gardner Webb and compete in the ACC Challenge.  The match against the Bulldogs is set for 10:00 a.m. (E.S.T.) in Boiling Springs, N.C., on Saturday, Nov. 20.  The ACC Challenge is set for Sunday, Nov. 21, is Chapel Hill, N.C.
