MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - Mark Gabriel scored his first goal of the season minutes before halftime to lead No. 2 seed Furman to a 1-0 win over No. 6 seed Davidson in the second semifinal of the 2010 Southern Conference Men's Soccer Championship at the Patriots Point Athletics Complex in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
Furman (10-6-4) moves on to face top seed UNCG in the championship match Sunday at 1 p.m. It will be the sixth championship match between the Paladins and Spartans since 1997 with Furman holding a 4-1 advantage in title tilts.
"It was another one-goal game for us - it has been like that all year," said Furman head coach Doug Allison. "That was a very good Davidson team, and any win this time of year is a good win. So we will take it."
Gabriel took advantage of a misplay by the Davidson back line and lifted a shot over the oncoming Chip Sanders to register his first goal of the season at the 42:06 mark. Walker Jernigan's pass from midfield bounced into the box, and the junior was credited with the assist.
Coming out of the locker room in the second half, Furman was content to take a more defensive posture while looking for the counter attack. Davidson was held without a shot on goal during the match while the total shots were even at four apiece.
"We haven't been (to the championship match) for a while," said Dane Roberts, one of Furman's four seniors. "I was a freshman the last time we went (in 2007) so it feels good."
Alec Kann notched his seventh shutout of the season while Sanders recorded one save in a losing effort.
The Wildcats' season ends at 7-7-6 overall.
