Furman's Brooks Duff Garners CoSIDA Academic All-District III First Team Honors
Greenville, S.C. - Brooks Duff, a member of the Furman men's soccer team, has been selected to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District III First Team, it was announced on Tuesday.
Duff, a native of Evans, Ga., has tallied three goals while appearing in all 17 matches and making four starts for the Paladins this season. The forward notched the match-winning goal on a bending 30-yard short in overtime versus Stetson in September that gave Furman the Diadora/Spinx Furman Invitational title. Later in the month, Duff scored in the final minutes to force overtime at Georgia Southern before firing a shot into the far-side netting in the extra period to lift Furman to a 2-1 road victory in its SoCon opener.
A Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll member, Duff sports a 3.80 GPA and is majoring in chemistry.
By earning all-district honors, the senior will now be included on the CoSIDA Academic All-America ballot.
Wilson Hood and Paulo Bonfim Named Academic All-District
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Wofford College men's soccer student-athletes Wilson Hood and Paulo Bonfim have been named to the CoSIDA/ESPN Academic All-District team. Hood earned a spot on the first team and Bonfim was honored on the second team.
Hood, a senior from Fletcher, N.C., leads the team this season with six goals and 13 total points. He has started all 15 games in 2010 and also leads the team with 39 shots. Last season he was named the SoCon Tournament MVP and led the team in scoring as the Terriers won the Southern Conference Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history. He is majoring in sociology.
Bonfim, a senior from Sao Paulo, Brazil, is captain of the team this season and he has started all 15 games. He has five shots on the season. In 2009, he started the first twelve games of the season and earned second team All-Southern Conference honors. He is a finance major.
This marks the second straight season Wofford has had two players named Academic All-District in the same season. Last year Nick Schuermann and Branson Hyatt were honored. Wofford was the only Southern Conference school with two players honored; Furman, Elon and Davidson each had one player each honored.
The ESPN All-District team is selected by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Wofford is in the third district, which includes schools in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. Nominees must have at least a 3.30 grade point average.
Elon's Carroll Selected to Academic All-District Team
ELON, N.C. -- Elon junior midfielder James Carroll has been honored as a member of the CoSIDA/ESPN Academic All-District 3 Second Team as announced on Tuesday. Carroll sports a 3.97 GPA as a computer science major.
Carroll's selection is the second in as many seasons for a Phoenix player. Defender Steven Kinney earned a first-team nod in 2009.
This season, Carroll is one of four Elon players to start all 17 contests for the Phoenix. A team captain this year, his lone goal of the season was the game-winner in Elon's first win of the season - a 4-0 decision over Richmond. For his career, Carroll has started 55 of Elon's 56 games, scoring two goals and assisting on another.
The Charlotte, N.C. native earned SoCon All-Freshman accolades in 2008 and has been a member of the Southern Conference Honor Roll, Academic All-SoCon, Dean's List, AD's Honor Roll and President's List selection in his career. Carroll has also earned the SoCon Commissioner's Medal for academics.
Davidson's Macnamara Named to ESPN Academic All-District Second Team
DAVIDSON, N.C. - Davidson junior co-captain Greg Macnamara was recognized for his stellar performance on the field and in the classroom Tuesday, as CoSIDA announced his election to the ESPN Academic All-District Second Team for men's soccer in District 2.
Macnamara is a mathematics major carrying a 3.68 grade point average and has previously drawn SoCon Academic All-Conference, Academic Honor Roll and Commissioner's Medal honors.
The Arlington, Va. native has been one of the top defenders in the Southern Conference and the backbone of a Davidson defense that has posted six shutouts this season. Prior to the current season, the league's coaches elected him to the Preseason All-SoCon team. He as also chipped in offensively, scoring the game-tying goal against nationally-ranked UC Santa Barbara and assisting on a goal against nationally-ranked Duke.
Three Academic All-District teams are chosen in each district, with those on the All-District first teams placed on the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration. Nominations and voting for the All-America programs are conducted by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America.
It marks the second consecutive season that a Davidson men's soccer player has been named to the team. Charlie Reiter was named to the all-district first team last season and advanced to the Academic All-America First Team.
