SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Chattanooga's Emmanuel Kirwa has been tabbed as the men's Southern Conference Runner of the Week for his performance during the weekend of October 1-2, the league office announced today.
Kirwa, a senior from Kapsabet, Kenya, ran a 24:04 on the 8K course at the Greater Louisville Classic over the weekend. His time was good enough for 16th overall out of over 400 runners in the Gold Division.
The Mocs return to action on Oct. 9, when the team travels to the Samford Invitational at Veterans Park in Hoover, Ala. The meet will be a course preview for the NCAA South Regional Championships that Samford will be hosting on Nov. 13.
Other top performers include:
Ryan Hopkins, a junior from Greenwich, Conn., lowered his 8K Davidson school record to 24:08 at the Greater Louisville Classic.
Josey Weaver, a junior from Weaverville, N.C., finished third overall at the UNC Charlotte Invitational. Weaver ran a personal best of 24:47 on the 8K course. It was a personal record by more than 45 seconds, and he led Western Carolina to a sixth place finish in a field of 25 teams. Weaver is a physical education major.
Sean Soderman, a junior for Appalachian State, finished 30th of the field of 400 at the Paul Short Run at Lehigh University. On a rain soaked 8K course, the Charlotte, N.C., native, ran a time of 24:39. He helped the Mountaineers to an 18th place finish out of 42 teams.
