Wofford's Covar Wins Winthrop Intercollegiate

Covar Wins Winthrop Intercollegiate:  Terriers Take Second

ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Freshman Anne Marie Covar won the Winthrop University Intercollegiate at the Rock Hill Country Club with a two-round score of 143 (-1) as the Wofford College Terries took second overall.

Covar finished the 5,900 yard course as the only player below par.  She shot a 74 on day one then turned around with a tournament-low 69 to win the event by seven strokes.  It was the freshman's best two-round score, best 18-hole score and best finish in her short career as a Terrier.

Teammate Meredith Few turned in a 151 with a day one score of 75 and day two score of 76 to finish in third place.  It was her best finish of her career and her fourth top ten performance of her career.

Alex Rankin finished just outside the top 25 with a 26th place finish with a score of 160 (80,80).  Leah Stevens finished one stroke behind with an 81 and an 80 for a 161 to round out the Terrier scorers.

The Terriers finished just five shots off of tournament winner Radford University (610) with a team score of 615.

 

Women's Golf Finishes Tied for Eighth at Nittany Lion

TAMPA, FLA. - Leigh Whittaker (Baden-Baden, Germany) tied for 10th to lead the College of Charleston to a tie for eighth at the Nittany Lion Invitational held Oct. 2-3 at Penn State's Blue Course in State College, Pa.  Host Penn State won the tournament with a three-round total of 901.  Western Michigan was second with a 910.  The Cougars, who tied with Akron, were just three strokes out of seventh with a 936.

Finishing third was Rollins with a 912 and tied for fourth was William and Mary and Harvard with a 913 apiece.

Rollins' Fabia Rothenfluh took individual medalist honors with a 218, with Penn State's Emily Ransone just one stroke behind in second.

Following Whittaker who finished with a 227 for the Cougars was Ainhoa Nogales (Pozuelo de Alarcon, Spain) who tied for 26th with a 231.  Anna Martin (Easley, S.C.) tied for 53rd with a 238 and tied for 62nd was Kathy Boehm (Poing, Germany) with a 240.  Rounding out the Cougar effort was Kathryn Miranda (Lexington, S.C.) who tied for 71st with a 244.

The Cougars are next in action Oct. 25-26 when they host the Palmetto Intercollegiate at Oak Point Golf Club on Kiawah Island, S.C.
