BOONE, N.C. - The Appalachian State men and the Samford women defended their team titles in the 2010 Southern Conference Cross Country Championship at Appalachian State in Boone, N.C., on Saturday.

The Appalachian State men were led by sophomore Will Raby and had five runner in the top fifteen to claim the conference title for the sixth consecutive year with 55 points.  Appalachian State, the preseason favorites to win the conference, placed four runners on the second-team all-conference team, which included Raby, Brandon Hudgins, Alex Taylor and Sean Soderman. 

UNCG men finished in second place with 66 points.  The Spartans were led by junior Joey Thompson, who finished second overall.

Emmanuel Kirwa from Chattanooga won his third-straight men's individual title with a time of 24:29.40 on the 8K course.

The Samford women claimed the second consecutive conference title with 71 points after placing two runners in the top five.  The Bulldogs, who were tabbed as preseason favorites, were led by sophomore Lauren D'Alessio, who finished in second place and earned first-team all-conference honors.  Senior Hillary Neal also earned first-team honors after finishing in third place.  Senior Ina Ables earned second-team all-conference, and Claire Grogan claimed all-freshman honors for the Bulldogs.

The Appalachian State women came in second place with 74 points.  The Mountaineers were led by Amy Neilson who finished sixth overall.

UNCG's Ashley Schnell won the women's individual title with a time of 17:39.98 on the 5K course.  The Spartans finished third overall with 87 points.

Men's Coach of the Year went to Appalachian State's Mike Curcio after winning his sixth straight SoCon championship.  Chattanooga's Emmanuel Kirwa won his third straight Runner of the Year honors, and the Freshman of the Year award went to Chattanooga's Lucas Cotter.

On the women's side, Samford's Rod Tiffin won his second straight Coach of the Year honor after leading the Bulldogs to the conference title for the second time in three years of competition in the Southern Conference.  UNCG's Ashley Schnell was awarded the SoCon Runner of the Year, while College of Charleston's Dena O'Brien took the Freshman of the Year honors.
