SPARTANBURG, S.C. - UNCG's Joey Thompson has been honored as the men's Southern Conference Runner of the week for his performance during the weekend of October 15-16, the league office announced today.
Thompson, a junior from Columbia, Md., broke the UNCG school record by nine seconds at the Royal Cross Country Challenge in Charlotte, N.C. His time of 24:20 on the 8K course was good enough for fourth overall in a very competitive field. Thompson helped paced the Spartans to a second place team finish, just behind Division II powerhouse Queens University, which ranks No. 7 nationally in DII. Thompson is a business major with a 3.90 GPA.
The Spartans have a week off before the Southern Conference Championships on Oct. 30 in Boone, N.C.
Other top performers include:
Trey Parker, a sophomore from Sumter, S.C., led Wofford in the USC Upstate Invitational over the weekend. Parker finished seventh overall with a time of 25:26.78 on the 8K course. Parker has led the Terriers in all three of the team's meets this season.
