SPARTANBURG, S.C. - UNCG's Ashley Schnell has been honored as the women's Southern Conference Runner of the Week for her performance during the weekend of October 15-16, the league office announced today.
The junior from Lincoln, Neb., was the third collegiate finisher at the Royal Cross Country Challenge over the weekend in Charlotte, N.C. Her time of 17:48 on the 5K course helped the Spartans to a second place overall finish behind Florida State. Schnell is a music performance major with a 4.0 GPA.
UNCG has the week off before the Southern Conference Championships in Boone, N.C., October 30.
Other top performers included:
Lauren D'Alessio, a sophomore at Samford, won the Chattanooga Frontrunner Invitational with a time of 10:54 over the two-mile course. She helped lead the Bulldogs to the team title. The Birmingham, Ala., native has led Samford in every race this season.
Andrea Kelsey, a Kettering, Ohio native, ran a Wofford record of 18:42.5 at the USC Upstate Invitational. Her time placed her ninth overall. Kelsey has led the Terriers in three of the four races this fall. The sophomore has a 3.86 GPA in environmental studies.
Dena O'Brien, a freshman from Pelham, Ala., placed ninth overall at the Blue Ridge Open with a time of 18:08 on the 5K course. O'Brien was the first SoCon runner to finish the course.
