College of Charleston 3, Wofford 1
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Senior Cole Dawley totaled her fifth consecutive double-double and Paige Johnson recorded her 1,000th career dig as the College of Charleston volleyball team won their seventh consecutive match with a 3-1 victory over the Wofford Terriers Friday night at Ben Johnson Arena (25-14, 25-22, 28-26, 25-18).
Dawley guided the Cougar (14-4, 3-0) attack with 44 assists and contributed on defense with 14 digs. On offense it was the duo of senior Ginny Phillips and junior Elyse Chubb, who combined for 28 kills.
The Cougars came out ready in the first set, hitting at a .542 hitting efficiency with 15 kills and just two errors.
In the next two sets the Terriers closed the gap and picked up a key third set victory to extend the match to a fourth game.
In the final set it was the power of Phillips who had five kills on nine attempts with no errors (.556 hitting percentage) to lead the Cougars. With the match tied at 10-10 the Cougars scored four of the next five points to build a 11-14 advantage.
CofC did not leave anything to chance, keeping the momentum on their side and closing the set and match with a 5-1 run, which ended with a Wofford ball handling error.
The Cougars travel next to Greenville, S.C., to battle the Furman Paladins tomorrow at 2 p.m. The contest will be a re-match of the 2009 Southern Conference Tournament Championship Match, which CofC won 3-0 to advance to their sixth NCAA Tournament. Wofford will return to action Saturday in Ben Johnson Arena against The Citadel at 6 p.m. as they reach the halfway mark of their eight-match homestand.

GREENVILLE, S.C. - Junior Alexis Shaffer hit .727 with eight kills to lead the Furman volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-18) win over The Citadel Friday night in Alley Gymnasium. With the Bulldogs ahead 17-14 in the third set, the Paladins went on an 11-1 run sparked by the serves of Natalie Braun and three kills from Shaffer and two from senior Katherine Hall for the victory.
The two teams battled to a 12-12 tie in set one before Furman began to pull away for the 25-18 win. In the second set, Furman allowed Citadel to come within one point of a tie at 18-17 before ending the set with a 7-1 run for a second 25-18 victory, which then set up the winning third set.
Senior Kelly Kirby paced the Paladins with 23 assists and added nine digs, while sophomore Natalie Braun led Furman with 11 digs and four service aces. Sophomore Chandler Ambrester tallied a team-high ten kills in the match.
Kaona Mercer led The Citadel (5-13, 0-3 SoCon) with nine kills, while Tatum Jestila posted a team-high 14 digs. Erin Bucheri added 15 assists for the Bulldogs.
Furman (7-7, 1-1 SoCon) will face the College of Charleston Saturday at 2 p.m. in Alley Gymnasium in a rematch of the 2009 Southern Conference Tournament championship match. The Citadel will travel to Spartanburg to take on Wofford on Saturday at 6 p.m.
