Rankin's Course Record Propels Wofford to Tournament Win

Rankin Sets Course Record:  Terriers Take Top Spot at Boscobel Intercollegiate

PENDLETON, S.C. -- Wofford's Alex Rankin shot a course record 69 over the par-72 5,989 yard Boscobel Golf Course in round two as the Terriers won the Boscobel Intercollegiate with a final round score of 609.

Rankin, who shot two over 74 in round one, turned in a three under round of 69 with five birdies to win the individual title with a score of 143.  She was the only player to turn in an 18-hole score of under par and a 36-hole score under par.  Not only was it a Boscobel course record, but she also set new Boscobel Intercollegiate tournament records for 18-holes and 36-holes.  Ranking led the field with 11 total birdies in 36-holes. 

Wofford's Anne Marie Covar and Newberry's Maria Luz Besio finished tied for second with a total score of 149.  Both players shot a day one score of 76 and followed it up with with a day two score of 73. 

Appalachian took second with a team score of 619, while Newberry posted a score of 634.  Pfeiffer (637), High Point (650), Presbyterian (653) and Anderson (656) rounded out the field. 

Trailing Rankin and Covar for the Terriers on day two was Few with a score of 76 and a total of 154.  Sarah Hurt rebounded after a score of 84 on day one with an 81 for a total of 165.  Tarah Taylor, whose 82 counted for the Terriers on day one, struggled with a 94 on day two for a total of 176.

Wofford will tee off again October 16th at the William and Mary Invitational.

 

Women's Golf Finishes Second at Boscobel

PENDLETON, S.C. - All five Mountaineers improved their scores from Saturday to Sunday as Appalachian State University women's golf secured a second-place finish at the Boscobel Intercollegiate with a 316-303=619 (+43). It is ASU's second-straight top-three team finish of the fall.

Kristina Boo posted the best finish of her young career with a 77-75=152 (+8) for fourth place. Boo's 22 pars on the 36 holes were the third-most of the tournament.

Fellow sophomore Yue Xu shaved five strokesoff her first-round score to card a 79-74=153 (+9). Xu has finshed in the top-10 of all nine tournaments with the Black and Gold. Her five birdies at the event were the fourth-most of any player.

Kerri Dice also notched a top-10 finish with a 79-75=154 (+10) to tie for sixth. Rumbidzai Masamvu tied for 18th at 81-80=161 (+17).

Mimi Burke placed 22nd at 84-79=163 (+19) and individual competitor Brittany Zachrich tied for 39th at 85-91=176 (+32).

Wofford took home the team title with a 609 (+33) and the Terriers' Alex Rankin set a course record with a 69 on Sunday to win the individual medal at 143 (-1).

The Mountaineers led the tournament with 98 pars as a squad. The Apps also posted the best team scores on the par-3 and par-4 holes.

ASU wraps up its fall slate on October 18-19 at the Wendy's Charleston Southern Invitational.

 

Mocs Shoot Low Round of the Season Ending up Seventh at Mercedes-Benz Championship

Senior Christine Wolf's two-under par 70 led the way for the Mocs tying for ninth overall

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's golf team shot its lowest round of the young season with a one-over par 289 in the final round of the Mercedes-Benz Women's Championship at Holston Hills Country Club.  Chattanooga topped playing partners Furman and Georgia State by 14 and 17 strokes, respectively.

The Mocs got better in every round over the weekend shooting 300, 293 and 289 on its way to an 18-over par total of 882.  They finished just three shots behind TCU in sixth at 879.

The key to today's round was a consistent effort from top-to-bottom in the playing order.  From Christine Wolf's (Igls, Austria) two under 70 to Jordan Britt's (Dayton, Tenn.) drop round of 76 (+4), it was more along the lines of what head coach Colette Murray expects from her squad.

"I'm pleased overall," said Murray, 2010 Southern Conference Coach of the Year. "Today was a good round, but we had a shot at going really low.  Three players in the top 15 is always a plus in any tournament.

"We need to apply the way we played today to a full 54 holes," added Murray.  "We've gotten off to slow starts this season, and that needs to change starting with our next event."

Wolf tied her best career total with an even-par 216.  Her 70 today also tied for her low round in her three-plus years.  She tied for ninth, her 10th top 10 finish as a collegian.

Fellow senior Emma de Groot (Coffs Harbour, New South Wales, Australia) and junior Maria Juliana Loza (Bucaramanga, Colombia) tied for 15th just two strokes behind Wolf at 218 (+2).  Loza ended up with a 73 today with her lone birdie coming on the par five 18th, while de Groot shot 74 (+2).

Freshman Yushira Budhram (Johannesburg, South Africa) had the best round of her young collegiate career with a level par round of 72.  She tied for 59th with a 54-hole total of 230 playing her final 22 holes at three under.  Britt tied for 68th at 235.

"I'm very pleased with the way our freshmen played today," noted Murray.  "Yushi was great.  She carried over her strong finish yesterday to today's round. Jordan stayed away from the big scores that kept her from scoring low the first two rounds."

Tennessee ran away with the team title shooting 849 (-15).  The Lady Vols eclipsed Arkansas in second by 20 strokes at 869, while Kent State wound up third at 874.

UT's Erica Popson won medalist honors sinking a 15-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole ending up at 207 (-9).  Ole Miss' Natalie Gleadall ended up second to Popson.  Kent's Martina Gavier was third just one shot back at 208 (-8).

Chattanooga returns to the course in two weeks, Oct. 22-24, at the Landfall Tradition.  The Tradition is one of the premier events on the collegiate schedule and is played at the Country Club of Landfall , site of the 2010 NCAA Women's Golf Championship.

Furman, Kenoyer Finish Ninth At Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Women's Championships

Knoxville, Tenn. - Furman's Stefanie Kenoyer (73-73-70=216) fired a final round 70 to grab ninth place at even par while the Paladins (298-293=303=894) slipped to a ninth place finish at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Women's Championships at the par-72, 6,302-yard Holston Country Club on Sunday.

Kenoyer, a senior from Lighthouse Point, Fla., birdied two of her final three holes to claim a share of ninth with a two-under 70 while junior Liz Wendt (77-71-71=219) posted her second consecutive 71 to finish with a share of 19th place at three-over 219 for the 36-hole tournament.

The Paladins opened the day in seventh, but slipped to a ninth place finish shooting a 15-over 303 on Sunday.  The host Tennessee Lady Vols (280-284-285=849) cruised to a 20-stroke victory over second place Arkansas (291-295-283=869) while Kent State, Mississippi and Notre Dame rounded out the top five in the 15-team field.

The Lady Vols' Erica Popson (67-69-71=207) and Mississippi's Natalie Gleadall (70-68-69=207) both finished at nine-under bar to pace the field.

Furman returns to action October 29-31, when it hosts the annual Lady Paladin Invitational at the Furman University Golf Course.

UNCG closes out play at Mercedes-Benz Women's Collegiate Championship

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Sophomore Courtney Taylor carded a final round 73 to record UNCG's best score of the day as the Spartans finished 15th at the Mercedes-Benz Women's Collegiate Championship on Sunday afternoon.

The Spartans shot a final round 302 to finish the tournament at 923. Tournament host Tennessee, which opened the day with a 20-shot lead, maintained its 20-shot advantage to win the tournament. Arkansas finished second, with Kent State third and Mississippi fourth.

Erica Popson won the individual title in a sudden-death playoff. She led for the first two rounds, but was caught on the final day by Mississippi's Natalie Gleadall's round of 69 that forced a playoff. Popson sank a 15-foot birdie putt, however, on the first playoff hole to claim the title. Gleadall and Popson set a new tournament record, shooting 207 for the tournament.

Ana Martinez wound up UNCG's top finisher in 36th place. She shot a final round 76 to finish at 223.

UNCG returns to action on Oct. 22 when it begins action at its final tournament of the fall slate. The Spartans will play in the Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, N.C. to close out the fall schedule.
