SPARTANBURG, S.C. - UNC Greensboro graduate student Katie Hansen and College of Charleston's Chelsea Taylor have been named the Southern Conference Women's Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week for all meets January 22-23. The selections are made the by the league's track and field coaches.
Hansen, a native of Portland, Ore., finished second in the 3K at the Niswonger Invitational. Her time of 10:05.98 broke the school record by 26 seconds.
Taylor, a freshman from Seneca, S.C., finished second in the pole vault at the UNC Classic, which was only her second collegiate meet. Her mark of 11-5.75 broke the school record by three-quarters of an inch.
The Spartans return to action Friday when they compete at the UNC Open. Up next for the Cougars is the Clemson Games on Friday.
Other top track performers included:
Appalachian State's Kiara Crutchfield, a junior from Greensboro, N.C., who placed eighth in the 60m hurdles at the Niswonger Invitational with a time of 9.11. She also finished ninth in the long jump with a leap of 17-10.75.
The Citadel's Micah Wessinger, a freshman from Chester, S.C., who finished fourth in the 800m at the UNC Classic. Her time of 2:19.82 set a new school record and currently ranks fifth in the league.
Western Carolina's Janet Carothers, a junior from Charlotte, N.C., who took fourth place in the 400m at the Niswonger Invitational with a time of 56.88. She ran a 55.0 split in the 4 x 400 relay, and the team's time of 3:44.47 set a school record.
Other top field performers included:
Appalachian State's Whitney Smyre, a senior from Stoney Point, N.C., who finished fifth in the 20 pound weight with a throw of 55-6.5. She also took fifth in the shot put with a distance of 44-5.25.
