Wofford 78, Chattanooga 63
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - With only a two-point lead at the half, Wofford outscored Chattanooga by thirteen in the second half to win 78-63 on Monday night in Benjamin Johnson Arena. The Terriers had four players score in double-figures and shot 50 percent from the floor in the game.
Wofford is 14-8 on the season and 6-3 in the SoCon, while Chattanooga is 11-10 overall and 5-4 in the conference. The Terriers were led by Noah Dahlman with 20 points and Junior Salters with 14 points. Brad Loesing added 13 points and eight assists with no turnovers, while Tim Johnson had seven rebounds. The Mocs were led by Ty Patterson with 15 points and three players had five rebounds each.
The Terriers were up 10-4 five minutes into the game, which included two three pointers by Junior Salters. Chattanooga answered and took the lead at 16-14 at 11:03 on the clock, but Wofford regained the lead with a three by Brad Loesing. A three by Jamar Diggs gave Wofford a 22-17 lead with 9:03 left in the first half.
Chattanooga cut the lead to three points, but a quick three pointer by Jamar Diggs and a lay-up off a steal by Cameron Rundles pushed the advantage back to 29-21 with six minutes to go in the half. The Mocs were able to use a 12-4 run over a three minute span to tie the game at 36 points, but Noah Dahlman scored the final two points of the half for a 38-36 Wofford lead at the break.
Early in the second half, Wofford held a 43-40 advantage before slowly using a 13-4 run over five minutes for a 56-44 lead at the ten minute mark. The Terriers pushed the lead to 15 points with 8:39 on the clock and were able to keep a double-digit lead for the remainder of the game. The Wofford defense held the Mocs to 32 percent from the floor and only 1-of-10 from three in the second half as they took the 78-63 win.
Wofford shot 50 percent from the floor and connected on 43.5 percent from three-point range. Chattanooga shot 44.7 percent overall and was 27.3 percent from behind the arc. Wofford had a 32-30 lead on the glass and commited only nine turnovers to the Mocs' sixteen.
Noah Dahlman scored in double-figures for the 22nd time this season and has led the team in scoring in 17 games. Wofford has won seven of their last eight games. Tim Johnson fouled out for Wofford, while DeAntre Jefferson fouled out for the Mocs.
Furman 63, Samford 58
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Darryl Evans poured in 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the field and 4-of-4 shooting beyond the arc to lift Furman over Samford 63-58 in Southern Conference men's basketball action on Carolina First Court at Timmons Arena Monday evening.
Furman upped its record to 10-10 overall and 4-5 in the SoCon while Samford slipped to 9-11 overall and 3-5 in the league. The Paladins improved to 4-0 against Samford in Greenville, S.C.
Evans, a senior from Spartanburg, S.C., connected on three first half to treys to tally 11 points as the Paladins erased an early 20-11 deficit to claim a 31-30 halftime advantage. The lead changed hands 12 times in the second half before freshman Colin Reddick converted on a three-point play with nine minutes remaining to put Furman ahead for good at 50-48.
Leading 52-50, Justin Dehm buried back-to-back treys to up the Paladins' lead to 58-50 with 4:31 left and Furman held on over the final minutes to secure the victory.
Bryson Barnes tallied 11 points and five rebounds to join Evans in double figures. Dehm netted nine points, all in the second half, while Noah States scored eight and Amu Saaka contributed six points and a game-high eight rebounds. The Paladins shot 48.8 percent (21-43) from the field, including 53.3 percent (8-15) from three point range. Furman held a 29-25 rebounding advantage and committed just 11 turnovers.
Senior Bryan Friday led three Bulldogs in double figures with 16 points to go with four rebounds and four assists. Trey Montgomery and Josh Davis added 13 and 12 points, respectively, for Samford which shot 46.7 percent (21-45) from the floor. The Bulldogs committed just 10 turnovers, but made only 6-of-21 three-point attempts.
Samford returns home to host Appalachian State on Thursday at 8:00 p.m.. Furman travels to Wofford on Saturday to face the Terriers in a 3 p.m. contest at Benjamin Johnson Arena in Spartanburg, S.C. The game will be televised live by SportSouth.
Western Carolina 100, College of Charleston 90
CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Richie Gordon led five Catamounts in double-figures as Western Carolina (16-4, 6-2) handed the College of Charleston (13-7, 8-1) its first Southern Conference loss of the season with a 100-90 victory in front of 4,765 fans at the Ramsey Center in Cullowhee, N.C.
The loss snaps the Cougars' current seven-game win streak as well as their string of 13 straight regular season SoCon victories that dated back to February 16 of last season. Their last loss was a 72-58 decision to The Citadel on February 14, 2009. CofC remains in first place of the South Division ahead of 6-3 Wofford despite the loss.
Leading by only five points, 73-68, with 10:21 to play in the game, the Catamounts used a 7-0 run to push their lead back to double-digits at 81-68 at the 8:43 mark and weathered a late CofC rally. The Cougars clawed to within 88-84 with a 16-7 run before Western Carolina responded with an 8-2 run that extended their lead to 96-86 with 1:33 to go and all but secured the 100-90 victory.
Early in the game, Western Carolina blitzed the Cougars as they opened with nine straight points over the first 2:02 before pushing their lead to a daunting 15-3 with only 3:40 gone by in the game. Trailing 20-10, back-to-back threes from freshman forward Willis Hall and junior guard Andrew Goudelock sparked an 11-5 run that saw Goudelock score eight straight points for the Cougars and pull them to within 25-21 with 10:15 to play in the half.
CofC would keep the game close for the rest of the half as they did not allow the Catamounts a lead of more than five points as they headed into the break trailing only 47-45.
The Cougars used consecutive hoops coming out of the half to take their first lead of the night at 49-47 and eventually lead by as many as four points at 60-56. With CofC holding a slim 65-64 advantage, Western Carolina took the lead for good with a 9-3 run that gave them back the lead at 73-68.
In addition to Gordon's team-high 19 points, the Catamounts also got 16 points and perfect 4-for-4 shooting from beyond the arc from Jake Robinson and 14 points from Mike Williams. Keaton Cole and Brigham Waginger rounded out the double-figure scorers with 11 and 10 points respectively while Brandon Giles added nine points and a game-high six rebounds.
Goudelock's game-high 24 points, 18 of which came from beyond the three-point arc, and 11 assists led the College of Charleston. Senior guard Tony White, Jr. added 23 points, including 5-of-10 from three-point range, while senior forward Casasn Breeden, Hall and junior guard Donavan Monroe each added 10 points apiece.
