Elon Competes At Duke Invite

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Elon men's tennis team finished its second of three days of competition at the annual Duke Invitational on Sunday afternoon. Sunday's matches were played on the campus of the University of North Carolina. Elon's Philip Nemec picked up a singles victory and Eric Turner and Alberto Rojas teamed for a doubles win.
 
The tournament is a round robin format with points awarded to each individual for victories based on the number of position they play in singles and doubles. The singles player and doubles tandem with the most points at the conclusion of the three-day tournament will be awarded as champions. Throughout the competition, Elon will be facing opponents from No. 19 Duke, No. 28 North Carolina and No. 62 East Tennessee State.
 
Despite close matches at several positions, Nemec was the lone Elon player to earn a singles win. The junior defeated North Carolina's Cameron Ahari, 7-5, 6-3, to earn eight points. Elon's Chase Helpingstine nearly knocked off the Heels' Andrew Crone, falling in a tight 7-6 (5), 7-6 (6) decision at number two. At number four, Rojas battled back after dropping the first set to extend the match to three sets against Alex Rafiee. Rafiee pulled out the 6-0, 2-6, 6-4 victory.
 
In doubles, Rojas and Turner rebounded after a 9-8 loss to Duke yesterday to take an 8-5 victory over Crone and Zach Hunter at number two. The duo earned four points for the win.
 
Elon will challenge players from East Tennessee State in the final day of competition tomorrow morning at 9 a.m.
