Saturday's Women's Tennis Roundup

#39 Wake Forest 7, Elon 0

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.
- The Elon women's tennis team opened the 2010 season with a challenging task - facing the 39th-ranked Wake Forest Demon Deacons at Leighton Stadium on Saturday morning. The Deacons took the 7-0 victory, but Elon head coach Elizabeth Anderson saw promising things from her Phoenix squad that returns four seniors.

"I was impressed with our high level of energy and enthusiasm as we began our season today against a strong opponent," commented Anderson. "The girls gained some valuable experience which will greatly help us this year."

Opening competition with doubles action, Elon's top tandem of Anna Milian and Elisa Simonetti jumped out to a 3-0 advantage before falling 8-6 to Sasha Kulikova and Emilee Malvehy. Milian recently became the first-ever Elon women's tennis player to be ranked in the Carolina Regional rankings, listed at 27th in the region.

Paige Kensrue, coming off injury which sidelined her this fall, teamed with Daleen Kloppers for the first time in dual action, falling 8-3 to Wake's Kathryn Talbert and Ryann Cutillo at number two. The Demon Deacon duo of Katarina Reveche and Aileen Davis took an 8-3 victory over Briana Berne and Laura Graybill as Wake took the early 1-0 advantage.

In singles action, Kensrue competed well at number two before falling 6-2, 6-4 to Malvehy. Graybill also put up a fight at number six, dropping a 6-3, 6-3 decision to Davis. Wake was victorious in straight sets at all six singles positions.

Elon will open up its home season when it hosts North Carolina Central and North Carolina A&T on Saturday, January 23 at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. Action begins at 11 a.m.
