SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Western Carolina sophomore Josey Weaver and Appalachian State junior Malcolm Styers have been named the Southern Conference Men's Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week for all meets January 7-9. The selections are made by the league's track and field coaches.
Weaver, who is from Weaverville, N.C., took first place in the 3000m at the Tar Heel Invitational with a time of 8:42.23. He improved his personal-best time by 13 seconds. The Catamounts claimed the men's team title at the invitational.
Newton, N.C., native Styers placed first in the weight throw at the Tar Heel Invitational with a distance of 56'6". His distance of 47'7 ¾" in the shot put was good for fifth place. Styers is currently ranked first in the conference in both events. Appalachian State finished third at the invitational.
Western Carolina returns to action January 22 when it travels to the ETSU Niswonger Invitational. The Mountaineers host the Appalachian Open on January 15.
