WCU Takes Team and Individual Titles at Sea Trail Event

Josefine Sundh Wins Second Individual Title, WCU Takes Team Championship at Sea Trail Intercollegiate

Swedish Catamount teammates, Josefine Sundh and Desiree Karlsson, post one-two finish

 

Sunset Beach, N.C. - Second round leader, Western Carolina junior Josefine Sundh, carded an even-par 216 over the 54-hole event to claim individual medalist honors and lead the Catamounts to the team championship at the Sea Trail Intercollegiate played on the Byrd Course at the par 72, 5-947-yard Sea Trail Resort.

 

Sundh edged runner-up, senior teammate, Desiree Karlsson, by four strokes to give WCU the top two finishers.

 

The Catamounts entered Sunday's final round one-stroke off the pace behind Longwood, which shot 295 on Saturday to claim the stroke advantage. Western posted a final round 302 to edge the Lancers by a stroke after Longwood turned in a 304 on Sunday, 897-to-898. Samford finished third, 11 strokes off the pace with a three-day total of 908, followed by host Elon (911) and Old Dominion (919) rounding out the top five.

 

WCU's 897 tied for the fourth-best, 54-hole score in school history, while the 216 for Sundh was her career-best three-round score and tied for the third-lowest, 54-hole tournament in school history.

 

With the win, Western Carolina has duplicated the program's best-ever start from 2005 when the Catamounts claimed three-straight team and individual titles. This season, Sundh and the Catamounts won the Draper Valley Intercollegiate, while freshman Malin Jansson and senior Tiffany Schisler shared medalist honors as the squad captured last weekend's Great Smokies Intercollegiate.

 

Sundh posted rounds of 71, 72 and 73 to finish at even-par, 216. Karlsson finished tied for second after shooting a 220 (73-77-70) over the three days. Jansson just missed the top 10, finishing 11th with a score of 228 (76-75-77) with sophomore Blaire Minter tallied a score of 233 (73-78-82) to finish tied for 20th for WCU.

 

Rounding out WCU's scorers was senior Tiffany Schisler in a two-way tie for 40th at 242, while sophomore Ashley Shinn finished amidst a two-way tie for 38th at 241 playing as an individual.

 

Western Carolina is off until October 11-13 when the Catamounts travel to the Lady Spider Intercollegiate at the Independence Golf Club in Richmond, Va.

 

 

 

SAMFORD WOMEN'S GOLF EARNS THIRD-PLACE FINISH AT SEA TRAIL INTERCOLLEGIATE

SUNSET BEACH, N.C. --- The Samford women's golf team tallied its best finish of the 2009-10 season Sunday as the Bulldogs carded a final-round score of 310 to place third at the Sea Trail Intercollegiate hosted by Elon University. Samford was led by senior Sara Hunt (71-77-73=221), who finished fourth in the 50-player competition.

 

"I'm happy with how we played today, but I know that we are capable of playing much better," said Samford head coach Woodie Eubanks. "I know we have a great team this year and we have high expectations. I don't think we played our best this weekend, but it was definitely the best that we've played this season. We just need to continue to improve and hopefully get better and better as the year goes on."

 

Samford finished the three-day competition with a final team score of 908. Western Carolina won the championship crown of the 2009 Sea Trail Intercollegiate with a 54-hole mark of 897, while Longwood University placed second at 898.

 

The Bulldogs were led by Hunt's final tally of 221. Samford's fellow-seniors Katelyn Stanier and Heather Arnold also earned top-15 finishes.

 

Stanier, a native of Newnan, Ga., posted a 79 on Sunday and finished with a three-round score of 224 (70-75-79). She placed seventh in the tournament. Arnold ended in a tie for 15th place after she carded a 78 in the final round of play. The Bulldogs' native of Lenior City, Tenn., concluded the weekend with a total score of 230 (76-76-78).

 

Rounding out the scores for Samford were sophomore Sarah Butts (77-77-80=234) and true freshman Kayla Turner (83-76-83=242).

 

Western Carolina's Josefine Sundh earned the individual title of the Sea Trail Intercollegiate. She tallied a third-round score of 73 on Sunday and finished the competition with a final tally of 216.

 

The Samford University women's golf team will next be in action Oct. 8-11 as the Bulldogs head to Daytona Beach, Fla., for the 2009 Xavier Invitational.

 

 

 

Wofford Women’s Golf Takes Seventh at Sea Trail Intercollegiate

 

SUNSET BEACH, N.C. ? The Wofford women’s golf team finished seventh after three rounds of play at the Sea Trail Intercollegiate, hosted by Elon University.

 

Junior Alex Rankin led the Terriers with a score of 234 (77-77-80) over three rounds, placing her tied for 23rd place individually. Senior Sarah Herbert, sophomore Sarah Hurt, and junior Meredith Few finished close behind, all tied for 27th place with scores of 235.

 

Herbert opened the tournament with a 76, struggled in the second round with an 84, but shot a team-low 75 in the third round. Hurt recorded scores of 79-77-79 over the three rounds, and Few carded 77-79-79. Rounding out the scores for the Terriers was freshman Tarah Taylor, who shot 250 (89-82-79).

 

The Terriers will compete again October 12-13 at the Richmond Spider Invitational in Richmond, Va.

 

 

 

Lady Mocs Finish Tied for Third in Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky.---Chattanooga’s 12th-ranked women’s golf team finished tied for third in the rain-shortened Bettie Lou Evans Fall Invitational at the University Club of Kentucky.  The Lady Mocs shot 295 in Sunday’s 18-hole round to finish at 598.

 

No. 9 Florida State claimed the with a 36-hole total of 587 shooting the tournament’s low round of 289 (+5) on Sunday.  UCF finished second at 592 followed by Chattanooga and Notre Dame at 598.

 

Junior Emma de Groot had her first top 10 of the year with a three-over par 146 placing her tied for fifth, three shots behind medalists Macarena Silva (FSU) and Paula Hurtado (FIU) at even-par 143.  de Groot shot rounds of 72 and 74.

 

The Lady Mocs started the day in fifth, but were tied for third with Notre Dame after the first 18 holes on Sunday following an 11-over par round of 295.  Despite the move up the leaderboard, FSU’s 289 gave it an 11-shot cushion over Chattanooga heading into the final round.

 

Salinas ended round two on a high note with an eagle on the par five fifth hole after starting her day on the sixth.  The native of Lima, Peru, shot one-over par 72 with one birdie and four bogeys to go with the eagle.  She finished tied for 17th at 150 with teammate Maria Juliana Loza.

 

Loza matched her first round score of 75 to complete the event at 150.  The tie for 17th is her best finish in three events this season.

 

Senior Kayla Stewart shot a three-over par 74 to round out the final round counting scores for the Lady Mocs.  She tied for 31st at 152 which is her best finish of 2009-10.  Junior Christine Wolf tied for 45th at 157.

 

“It was a disappointing weekend to be honest,” said head coach Colette Murray.  “We didn’t play well and not getting in the entire 54 holes limited some opportunities to make up ground.  We have a lot of putting and short-game work to get in before the Mercedes-Benz.”

 

The Lady Mocs are off until Oct. 16-18 when they travel to Farragut, Tenn., for the Mercedes-Benz Women’s Championship hosted by Tennessee at Fox Den Country Club.  It is the last tournament of the fall schedule for Chattanooga.

>The Lady Mocs entered the day in fifth place at 303 five shots behind FSU (298).  They played with Texas State and Notre Dame.

>Percentage of par/better holes (counters):  73.6% (53/72) in round two, 74.3% (107/144) for the tournament.  de Groot was strong with the best percentage for the Lady Mocs at 83.3% (30/36) followed by Loza at 77.8% (28/36), Salinas at 69.4% (25/36), Stewart at 66.7% (24/36) and Wolf at 63.9% (23/36).

 

>Wolf had the most pars in round two for the Lady Mocs with 13, yet she had the drop score with a 76 (+5) with zero birdies and five bogeys.

 

>Chattanooga played the par fives at even par from the four counting scores, par fours at +26 and the par threes at level par.

 

 

 

McFadden, Davis Help Elon to Fourth-Place Finish

SUNSET BEACH, N.C. ? Tara McFadden and Diana Davis each finished in the top 10 to lead the Elon women's golf team to a fourth-place finish at the Sea Trail Women's Intercollegiate. McFadden posted a three-round score of 223 (76-74-73) to finish in a tie for fifth while Davis placed eighth with a final score of 225 (74-76-75).

 

Lauren Lebak finished in a tie for 20th with a final score of 233 (78-77-78) while Kelsey Johnson posted a three-day score of 234 (78-76-80) to place in a tie for 23rd and Shannon Prunty took the 38th spot with a score of 240 (76-86-78). 

 

Dani Mullin, playing as an individual, finished 10th after posting a final score of 227 (75-76-76). Also playing as individuals, Meghan Green tallied a score of 231 (78-77-76) to finish tied for 17th and Virginia Mayer finished with for 43rd with a score of 244 (82-81-81).

 

Western Carolina's Josefine Sundh and Desiree Karlsson led the Lady Catamounts to the team championship with a score of 897. Sundh took home the medalist honors with a final score of 216 (71-72-73). Karlsson finished tied for second after shooting a 220 (73-77-70) over the three days.  Malin Jansson finished 11th with a score of 228 (76-75-77) and Blaire Minter tallied a score of 233 (73-78-82) to finish tied for 20th for WCU.

 

Longwood's Ariel Witmer finished tied for fifth (76-71-76--223) to help the Lancers to a second-place finish with a score of 898. Alexa Boucher finished ninth with a score of 226 (78-75-73) while Hauen Lee finished tied for 12th (76-78-75--229) and Brooke Mallory placed 19th (76-76-80--232).

 

Sara Hunt finished fourth with a score of 221 (71-77-73) and Katelyn Stanier place seventh (70-75-79--224) to lead Samford to the third-place spot with a score of 908. 

 

Old Dominion's Samantha Morrell finished tied for second after posting a 220 (71-74-75) to help ODU to a fifth-place finish with a score of 919.

 

The women's team returns to action on October 19-20 at the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate in Greenville, N.C.
