Furman 3, Belmont 0
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman scored a pair of goals in the final 10 minutes of the first half and cruised to a 3-0 triumph over Belmont in non-conference men's soccer action on Sunday afternoon at Stone Soccer Stadium.
With the victory, Furman improved to 4-2-2 on the season and extended its unbeaten streak to five matches. The Paladins have tallied 12 goals over their last four matches. Belmont fell to 1-6-1 on the season.
Jordan Howard put Furman on the board in the 36th minute. The senior collected a loose ball outside of the box and rocketed a shot into the lower right hand corner from 25 yards at 35:09. In the 39th minute, Mark Gabriel played a ball into the path of Jonathan Collier who lined a shot past Belmont keeper Ron Gravely and into the left corner from 22 yards to double the Paladin lead at 2-0.
Fabien Vorbe capped the scoring in the 79th minute with his fourth goal of the season. Talon Stroud led Alex Crooks with a pass down the left wing and Vorbe slid onto Crooks' cross to the far post to give Furman a 3-0 margin.
The Paladins managed an 11-7 edge in shot attempts and 5-2 advantage in corner kicks. Maros Valko collected two saves to earn the shutout in goal for the Paladins while Gravely made four first half saves in the loss for the Bruins.
Furman opens Southern Conference play on Wednesday when it travels to UNC Greensboro for a 7 p.m. contest before hosting Charlotte at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday at Stone Stadium.
Wofford 4, Lipscomb 1
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Wofford College men's soccer team picked up a 4-1 win on Sunday afternoon against Lipscomb at Synder Field. The Terriers scored four goals in the second half, including two by Kentrel Owens, in the victory.
Wofford moves to 4-0-2 on the season, while the Bison are 3-5-1. The Terriers had a 13 to seven lead on shots. Terrier goals were scored by Andrew Eppelsheimer, Mac Gambill and two by Kentrel Owens.
The Bisons had control of the ball for the first seven minutes of play and had the first shot at 10:06 when Andrew Chamberlain got his foot on a cross but the attempt was wide. The Terriers' first shot of the game came at 12:58 when Branson Hyatt took a free kick from 30 yards that went high and wide left.
With nine minutes left in the first half, Branson Hyatt added a shot from 25 yards out that was also wide left. The best chance of the half for Wofford came with just 25 second left when Eddie Nam took a shot from fifteen yards out that was saved by Brent McGee.
In the second half, Wofford took the lead at 49:39 when Andrew Eppelsheimer took a shot from 15 yards out that found the back of the net. Branson Hyatt had the assist as the Terriers took a 1-0 lead. The Bison responded at 51:44 when Andrew Chamberlain cross the ball back in front of the net and found Andre Santos on the left post who put the ball into the corner to tie the game.
At 62:15, the Terriers regained the lead when Paulo Bonfim fed a ball to Kentrel Owens up top. Owens took the ball in to 15 yards and put the ball past the keeper. Four minutes later, Armin Kinigadner was the one to chip the ball up to Owens, who this time took the ball to ten yards and took the shot to the right of the goalie. Lipscomb had a chance to tie at 76:45 when Chase Nieri had a shot that was saved by Thomas Hunter.
Wofford added a fourth goal at 81:27 when Mac Gambill gained possession of the ball in the box. He turned and made a couple moved before putting the ball past the goalie to go up 4-1. Lipscomb had several chances late, but they were wide or high.
For the Terriers, goalie Thomas Hunter made one save and had one goal against. Brent McGee had four saves and four goals against for Lipscomb. The Terriers had eight corner kicks, while Lipscomb had three. Lipscomb was called for 15 fouls to Wofford's eleven and no cards were issued in the game.
Wofford has won four straight games, their longest winning streak since putting together eleven wins in a row in the 1994 season. The four goals in a game were the most since defeated Lipscomb 4-1 in 2007. Wofford is the lone undefeated team in the Southern Conference. The goal by Mac Gambill was the first of his career and Kentrel Owens had his first multi-goal game.
The Terriers will begin Southern Conference play on Wednesday night at 7:00 pm at Appalachian State.
Jacksonville 5, College of Charleston 3
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The 26th ranked College of Charleston men's soccer team lost to Jacksonville 5-3 on Sunday afternoon in the final match of the 2009 JU/NIKE Invitational.
With the loss, the Cougars fell to 6-3-0, while Jacksonville improved to 2-4-1 with the win. Charleston returns to the pitch on Wednesday, Sept. 30th when they travel to Davidson for their Southern Conference season opener. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
In the first half, the Cougars were dominant offensively, outshooting the Dolphins 10-4 in the period. Jacksonville got on the board first 46 seconds into the match as Jonathan Jackson scored. Charleston got into the scoring column in the fifth minute, as John Bello scored his third goal of the season off a Ralph Lundy, III assist.
Tyler Williams made the score 2-1 in Jacksonville's favor in the 20th minute with a goal, but Charleston was quick to counter, as Tyler Vukoder scored in the 32nd minute. Lundy, III recorded an assist on the play. Three minutes later, the Cougars took their first lead of the match when Francis Twohig scored, as Charleston took the 3-2 lead into the half.
In the second half, Jacksonville tied the game up at three in the 49 minute as Stefan Runeman scored on a penalty kick. The score remained tied at three into the 80th minute, however, Runeman broke the tie with a goal in the 84th minute. In the 86th minute, Jackson added an insurance goal, which was his second of the day.
Overall, Jacksonville outshot the Cougars 19-13 and held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.
