UNC Greensboro 2, Campbell 0
BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Cruz Oronos scored early and Sven Picton scored late as UNC Greensboro topped Campbell, 2-0, in men's soccer action Wednesday night.
Oronos scored in 17th minute, while Picton scored with 2:15 to play as the Spartans (2-4-1) extended their unbeaten streak against the Camels to 11 straight meetings. Campbell (1-5-0) hasn't beaten UNCG since 1994. The Spartans are 10-0-1 in that span.
At 16:28, Mack fed Oronos, who hit a blast from 30 yards out into the upper left corner for his first goal this season. Oronos nearly had another three minutes later, if not for a kick save by Campbell's Ryan Amons.
UNCG got the insurance goal it was looking for, however, with 2:15 to play.
Freshman A.J. Nelson dribbled into the left side of the box and played a ball in front to Picton, who one-timed it home for his first goal of the season.
Redshirt freshman Peyton Ford recorded the shutout with four saves in goal for UNCG. Campbell had a 15-13 advantage in shots.
It was the first time in the regular season that UNCG had scored more than one goal in a match. The Spartans handed head coach Michael Parker career win No. 490 in the process, the exact same number of wins that the program has recorded, as well.
UNCG returns home Saturday night at face Charlotte for Homecoming. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
#6 Wake Forest 2, Elon 1
WINTSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Early goals to begin each half of play were the difference as the Elon men's soccer team fell 2-1 to the sixth-ranked Wake Forest Demon Deacons in non-conference action at Spry Stadium on Wednesday night. Wake scored in the seventh minute of play and again just over seven minutes into the final period to move to 4-1-1 on the season. Elon's streak of consecutive shutouts was halted at four as the Phoenix dropped to 3-3-1 overall.
"I felt the team worked extremely hard tonight," said Elon head coach Darren Powell. "We created a couple good chances throughout the course of the match, but in the end, Wake Forest was able to wear us down and prove why it is one of the top programs in the country."
Wake Forest junior Corben Bone rocketed the go-ahead goal from the top of the box past a sprawling Clint Irwin at the 52:49 mark. Irwin had a busy night trying to contain the high-powered offensive attack of the Demon Deacons. The junior keeper racked up six saves and cleared numerous balls in the contest.
With just under 12 minutes remaining in the game, Irwin came out of the net to make a play on the ball and was called for a foul that awarded Wake Forest a penalty kick. Irwin stopped the shot, keeping Elon within a goal of tying the score.
Elon freshman Chris Thomas had an opportunity to match the score just minutes later, but Wake keeper Akira Fitzgerald covered the shot to stop the Phoenix attack. Fitzgerald corralled three saves in the victory.
Wake Forest negated any chance at a fifth consecutive Elon shutout in the early minutes of action. Bone served the ball from the left side into the mixer, finding the foot of Austin da Luz. Luz' shot got past a diving Irwin to give the home team a 1-0 advantage.
Shortly after, the Deacons nearly advanced their lead when Zach Schilawski drilled a shot from about 20 yards out. Irwin made a foot save to clear the ball and hold the Wake advantage at one.
Elon got the equalizer in the 19th minute of play. Senior Erfan Imeni pushed the ball forward to a streaking Justin Wyatt. Wyatt beat his defender and curled the ball over the hands of Fitzgerald into the far corner of the net.
Wake Forest outshot Elon, 23-11, in the contest, only the second Phoenix opponent to hold the shot advantage this season. The Deacons also took eight corner kicks compared to two by the Phoenix. Wake extended its non-conference unbeaten streak to 45 consecutive matches.
Elon will open Southern Conference play on Saturday, September 26 when it hosts Georgia Southern at Rudd Field at 7:30 p.m.

The Eagles recorded four more shots in the half but were unable to put any on target. David Leonard gave Georgia Southern its best chance, but he had his shot blocked by the USC Upstate defense.
