CofC's Havel Tabbed Player of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - College of Charleston's Sarah Havel, a sophomore middle blocker, has been named the Southern Conference Volleyball Player of the Week for her performance in matches September 14-20.

The Carmel, Ind., native posted 22 kills, 19 blocks and a .304 hitting percentage in two matches at the Holiday Inn Charleston Riverview Classic in Charleston, S.C. Havel averaged 3.14 kills and 2.71 blocks per game. She also recorded 19 blocks, including five solo, during the tournament.

In the Cougars' match against South Florida, Havel recorded a double-double with a team-high 12 kills and a career-high 10 blocks, of which two were solo. College of Charleston earned a 3-2 victory in that match.

Against Lafayette, Havel posted 10 kills, nine blocks and a hitting percentage of .500. The Cougars swept the Leopards in straight sets. For her efforts, Havel was named the Most Valuable Player at the tournament.

Coming up for Havel and the Cougars is a home match Tuesday against Charleston Southern. College of Charleston begins conference play Saturday when it hosts Western Carolina.

Also nominated this week were The Citadel's Tatum Jestila, Elon's Sarah Schermerhorn, Furman's Caroline Adams, Georgia Southern's Bethany Sanford, UNC Greensboro's Caley Redden, Samford's Sheriden Stangohr, Chattanooga's Courtney Barnes and Wofford's Stacy Byrd.
