SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Wofford men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2009 season by hosting the Wofford Cross Country Relays on Tuesday.
Wofford welcomed Gardner-Webb and USC Upstate to participate in the three-team relay matchup. The race was a 6K for the women, with each partner running one 3K lap, while the men each ran 4K laps, for an 8K race.
For the women, the pair of Kari Harris and Caroline Liddy led the Terriers, coming in fifth with a time of 24:14. USC Upstate claimed the women's title, with the duos of Carolyne Chelulei /Joan Tangwar and Lauren Walker/Emily Tangwar claiming first and second place, respectively.
The Terrier men finished second in the event, edging out Gardner-Webb. The teams of Russell Baker/Paul Vecchione and Josh Riley/Trey Parker led Wofford, coming in simultaneously with a 27:30 mark. USC Upstate also claimed the men's title with a first place finish by the team of Cameron Thomas and Gilbert Kemboi.
The Terriers will hit the course again on September 6 at the Eye-Opener Invitational, hosted by USC Upstate in Spartanburg, S.C. The women's race begins at 8:00 a.m. and the men will take the course at 8:30 a.m.
