ELON, N.C. - Lauren Copenhagen and Traci Stewart recorded eight kills each to lead the Phoenix volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-20) in its home opener. With the win, Elon improves to an unblemished 5-0 record, while Charlotte drops to 1-3 on the season.

Jessica Barrow finished with seven kills, while Sarah Schermerhorn and Caroline Lemke recorded six kills each. Emily Regan paced an Elon offense that recorded a .217 team hitting percentage with 29 assists. Schermerhorn's .462 attack percentage was team high. The team recorded six service aces, including three by Regan.

Schermerhorn was stellar defensively, tallying four assisted blocks and four digs. Copenhagen and Regan each finished with two assisted blocks, while Lemke posted Elon's only solo block. Ali Deatsch finished with a match-high 13 digs.

Charlotte's Bianca Rouse went five-for-six with just one error for a .667 hitting percentage in the effort. Kathleen Hicks finished with a team-best seven kills, while Jenna Litoborski totaled six kills.

Sheri Davis and Kaitlin Knight each recorded a solo block for the 49ers. Hicks led the way with five assisted blocks, while Jennifer Webb notched four assisted blocks.

Set one saw the Phoenix inch back from a 15-10 deficit following a kill by Copenhagen and a service ace by Schermerhorn. Two consecutive Charlotte miscues allowed the Phoenix back-to-back points and Elon took its first lead of the set at 21-20. A service error by the 49ers sparked a three-point run that sealed the first set 25-21.

Charlotte jumped out to an early 7-3 lead in the second set, but nine straight Elon points, including three service aces by Regan, allowed the Phoenix to take a 13-9 advantage. Charlotte tied the match at 16 on a block by Webb and Hicks. Elon answered with four-straight points to take a 20-16 lead. Elon scored four of the final five points to win set two 25-20.

The teams traded points on the opening 16 possessions before consecutive kills by Stewart and Barrow put the Phoenix up 10-8. Two kills by Schermerhorn helped Elon jump out to a 14-10 lead, but Charlotte brought the set within two at the 16-14 mark. A kill by Schermerhorn put the set and the match out of reach of the 49ers at 23-19. A Lemke kill sealed the set 25-20 and the match for the Phoenix.

Elon returns to the court Friday, September 4 at 4:30 p.m. when it takes on Howard in the Liberty Invitational in Lynchburg, Va. Elon will also face East Tennessee State and Liberty in the two-day tournament. Live stats will be available for each match at www.libertyflames.com.

UNC Greensboro 3, Winston-Salem State 0

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Senior Catherine Hanners had a match-high eight kills and four other Spartans added six kills as UNC Greensboro swept Winston-Salem State, 3-0, on Tuesday evening at the C.E. Gaines Center. The Spartans moved to an even 2-2 on the early season while the Rams fell to 0-3 this year.

Olivia Humphries, Billie Baker, Caley Redden and Alissa Beaudway all recorded six kills in the match as UNCG hit .329 as a team. Baker hit a match-high .545 for UNCG and Redden added six service aces. Freshman Arielle Lysacek had 26 assists in the match and added four digs.

Jasmine Frazier led the Rams with six kills and Annika Barnwell had nine digs to lead the home squad.

Halfway through the first game, the Spartans led 11-9 as the two teams traded points early. UNCG was able to extend its lead to 20-11 on a Hanners kill and cruised to win the game, 25-17.

In the second game, the Rams jumped out to an early 10-4 lead after a Frazier kill. The Spartans then went on an incredible 18-1 run as they took a 22-11 lead. UNCG would take the game after kills by Hanners, Humphries and Lysacek.

UNCG carried its momentum into the third and final game as it hopped out to a 12-4 lead. The Spartans stretched their lead to 18-9 on a kill by Beaudway before UNCG won the game, 25-15 on another kill by Beaudway to seal the match.

The Spartans return to play this weekend as they travel down to Columbia, S.C. for the Gamecock Invitational. UNCG opens play on Friday against Coastal Carolina at 12 p.m. before taking on Eastern Kentucky at 5 p.m. The Spartans will wrap up competition on Saturday at 12 p.m. against host South Carolina.
