Winthrop 3, Appalachian State 2

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Winthrop scored two goals in 22 seconds to come from behind and beat Appalachian State University men's soccer Friday afternoon 3-2 in Charlotte.

For the third time since 2008, ASU started the scoring with the help of an own goal but were unable to come away with the victory.  The Mountaineers grabbed the lead in the 7th minute when Winthrop headed the ball into the back of their own goal.

ASU increased the lead to two when Nate Latigue put home a cross pass from the right side from Ethan Durland just seven minutes later.

Despite being outshot 8-3 in the first half, ASU held the two goal lead until Cameron Alksnis scored in the 33rd minute off a header.

Matt Lacey tied the score at two in the 80th minute off an assist from Said Abdi.  The Eagles took the lead just 22 seconds later when Adam Skonicki scored off a deflected shot to give Winthrop the 3-2 lead.

Appalachian held Matthew Skonicki, the fourth leading scorer in the NCAA, in check, but were outshot 15-7 in the defeat.

Collin Taylor made three saves in goal while Enrique Miranda made two saves for Winthrop.

The Mountaineers take on Cal St. Bakersfield on Sunday at 11 a.m.

 

Lehigh 3, College of Charleston 2

 

BETHLEHEM, PA. -- The College of Charleston men’s soccer team suffered its first loss of the 2009 season on Friday night, as they fell to Lehigh, 3-2 at Ulrich Athletic Complex in Bethlehem, Pa.

 

With the loss, the Cougars fell to 5-1 on the year, while Lehigh improved to 3-2-1 with the victory. Charleston returns to the pitch on Sunday, Sept. 20 when they visit Bucknell beginning at 1 p.m.

 

In the first half, Lehigh’s Joe Peulo got the Mountain Hawks on the board first with a goal at the 20 minute mark.

 

Charleston countered with a score of their own in the 34th minute, as Francis Twohig scored from 25 yards out to tie the score at one. The Mountain Hawks, however, took a 2-1 lead into the half, as Zachary Gould scored his first goal of the year in the 39th minute.

  

In the second half, Lehigh extended their lead to 3-1 when Austin Decker scored in the 55th minute. The Cougars made one more rally at the lead in the 73rd minute, as Matt Morris scored his second goal of the season off a Ralph Lundy, III set piece to make it 3-2.

 

This was, however, the closest the Cougars got to the Lehigh lead, as the Mountain Hawks hung on over the final minutes to take the match.

 

Overall, both the Cougars and the Mountain Hawks took 11 shots on the night and each had two corner kicks.
