CONWAY, S.C. -- Senior Debola Ogunseye registered a hat trick, including the game-tying goal in the 89th minute, to help Furman to a 3-3 draw with Coastal Carolina in non-conference men’s soccer action Thursday afternoon at CCU Soccer Stadium in Conway, S.C.
Ogunseye netted his third goal of the day on an assist from Fabien Vorbe with only 1:23 left in regulation as Furman earned the draw and extended its unbeaten streak to three matches. The hat trick marked the first three-goal performance by a Paladin since Eliot Paschalis bagged three goals against Liberty on September 26, 2004.
The Lagos, Nigeria, native got Furman on the scoreboard at the 26:01 mark. Warren Creavalle fed a pass to the senior who raced behind the Chanticleer defense and beat keeper Taylor Kelliher for his first goal as a Paladin. James Stapleton equalized for Coastal Carolina (2-2-2) at 31:15 as his shot took a deflection and found the back of the net.
With the match tied 1-1 in the 62nd minute Joe Anderson fired a shot past Paladin keeper Alec Kann to the lefthand side on assists from Ross Kelly and Stapleton to give the Chanticleers a 2-1 lead. Furman’s Debola Ogunseye answered with his second goal of the afternoon at 62:47 on a header off of a cross from Jordan Howard, but Anderson helped CCU regain the advantage at 3-2 as he scored on a cross from Djamel Bekka at 71:34.
Furman held a 17-13 edge in shot attempts and dominating 11-6 advantage in shots on goal. The Paladins forced Kelliher into making eight saves while Kann stopped three shots to earn the victory for Furman.
The Paladins, 2-2-2 on the season, return to Stone Stadium to host Atlantic-Sun Conference foe Lipscomb on September 25, at 7 p.m.
