Kenoyer, Hilea Help Furman Into Second Place After Two Rounds At Cougar Classic

 

Charleston, S.C. -- Furman junior Jackie Hilea’s hole-in-one on the par-3 No. 16 highlighted the opening day of the 2009-10 season as the Furman women’s golf team grabbed a share of second place after two rounds at the Duramed Cougar Classic at the par-72 Yeamans Hall Golf Club in Charleston, S.C., on Sunday.

 

Hilea (71-70=141), who holds a share of fifth place after the first 36 holes, found the cup with a five iron on the 165-yard par-3 on her way to an opening round 71.  She followed with six birdies in the second round to notch a two-under 70.

 

Fellow junior Stefanie Kenoyer fired a first round 69 and followed with a two-under 70 to move into third place at five-under par after two rounds.  The Lighthouse Point, Fla., native and two-time Southern Conference individual medalist bogeyed just two of the tournament’s first 36 holes while recording seven birdies on the day.

 

Freshman Laura Wearn of Charlotte, N.C., posted rounds of 72 and 75 to begin her first collegiate tournament while sophomores Liz Wendt and Brie Heinzler came on strong in round two with scores of 71 and 73, respectively.

 

Georgia (280-283=563) holds a 12-stroke lead over Furman and Florida State and 15-stroke advantage on fourth place North Carolina after 36 holes.  Lacey Agnew (71-65=136) of Florida State holds a two-stroke lead over second place Marta Silva Zamora (67-71=138) of Georgia and three-stroke lead on Kenoyer with 18 left to play.  The 18-team Cougar Classic field includes nine 2009 NCAA Tournament teams and four teams that finished last season ranked in the top 25.

PRIMM, Nev..---It was a good day for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s golf team as it stands in second place at the Golfweek Conference Challenge at the Primm Valley Desert Course Sunday afternoon.  The Lady Mocs shot 296, eight-over par.

 

Chattanooga trails leader Oklahoma State by one shot and is ahead of Ohio State and Pepperdine in third at 298.  Cal is fifth at 300 (+12).

 

Junior Christine Wolf led the Lady Mocs with an opening round 71 (-1).  Wolf tallied five birdies on the day getting off to a great start with three birdies on her opening five holes.  She is tied for second overall with Pepperdine’s Taylore Karle, three shots behind Oklahoma State’s Caroline Hedwall.

 

Fellow junior Emma de Groot shot a 74 (+2) for the Lady Mocs.  de Groot got off to a sluggish start and was four-over par through six holes before righting the ship.  She played her final 12 holes at two-under par to finish at 74.

 

Sophomores Maria Salinas and Maria Juliana Loza rounded out the scoring for the Lady Mocs.  Salinas shot a three-over par total of 75, while Maju came in at 76 (+4).  Senior Kayla Stewart’s 81 (+9) was today’s drop score.

 

Chattanooga returns to the course at 12:40 p.m. (EDT) playing with Oklahoma State and Ohio State.  Kayla Stewart leads off on the first hole followed by Loza, Salinas, de Groot and Wolf.

 

NOTES:

 

>Chattanooga played with Cal and Jacksonville State.  The Lady Mocs topped the Bears by four strokes and the Gamecocks by 21.

 

>Head Coach Colette Murray is a former player at Jacksonville State graduating in 2004 and coaching there as an assistant prior to coming to Chattanooga.

 

>The Lady Mocs carded 12 birdies led by Wolf with five.

 

>Chattanooga played par or better on 64 of 90 holes with Wolf, de Groot and Salinas scoring par or better on 14 holes each.  The Lady Mocs scored par or better on 71.1 percent of their holes on Sunday.

 

>The Lady Mocs had 52 pars led by Salinas with 13.

 

>Chattanooga played the par fives at one-under par from the four counting scores.

 

 

 

 

Georgia Leads Duramed Cougar Classic after Two Rounds

 

Charleston, S.C. - Georgia came within one stroke of setting a tournament record with a 280 in the first round and followed it up with a 283 in the second to take a 14-stroke lead after two rounds of the Duramed Cougar Classic being held Sept. 12-13 at Yeamans Hall Golf Club in Charleston, S.C.  The Bulldogs finished the day with a 563, while Florida State and Furman tied for second with a 575 apiece.

 

Florida State's Lacey Agnew leads the tournament with an eight-under par 136 after firing a tournament record 65 in the second round.  Georgia's Marta Silva Zamora is second with a six-under par 138.

 

Two players hit holes-in-one today, with Furman's Jackie Hilea posting one during the first round on hole 16.  USF's Ana Joaquina hit one during the second round on hole six.

 

Charleston fired two of its best rounds in the Cougar Classic, shooting a 295 in the first round and a 291 in the second.  Sophomore Leigh Whittaker (Baden-Baden, Germany) is tied for eighth for the Cougars with a 142 on the day, after firing a 69 in the second round.

 

Freshman Kathy Boehm (Poing, Germany) is tied for 25th with a 147, while Senior Emily Rapp (Simpsonville, S.C.) is tied for 32nd with a 148.  Freshman Vanessa Koechli (Greer, S.C.) is tied for 52nd with her 151 and tied for 63rd is Freshman Ainhoa Nogales (Pozuelo de Alarcon, Spain).

 

Competing as individuals for the Cougars is Senior Courtney Brink (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) who is tied for 45th with a 150 and Freshman Anna Martin (Easley, S.C.) is tied for 86th with a 161.

UNCG 12th after two rounds at Duramed Cougar Classic

 

HANAHAN, S.C. ? Annelie Weimenhog tied a career-low with an opening round 69 and is tied for 17th after two rounds at the Duramed Cougar Classic at Yeamans Hall.

 

The Spartans are in 12th place in the 18-team field, carding rounds of 300 and 301 on Sunday. Georgia leads the tournament at 563, 12 shots better than Florida State and Furman.

 

Weimenhog had five birdies and two bogies in her opening round Sunday morning and was sitting in a tie for fourth, two shots off the lead as the second round began. However, she shot a second-round 76 to fall to 17th place, nine shots off the pace.

 

Florida State’s Lacey Agnew is the individual leader after shooting a tournament record 65 in the afternoon round. She has a two shot lead over Georgia’s Marta Silva Zamora.

 

Monday’s final round will get underway at 8:45 am with a shotgun start.
