Chattanooga 1, Gardner-Webb 0 (2OT)

 

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. --- Chattanooga freshman forward Becca Smith nailed a direct kick in double-overtime to give the Lady Mocs soccer team a 1-0 win over host Gardner-Webb in game two of the Border Classic Friday night at Greene-Harbison Stadium in Boiling Springs, N.C.

 

Chattanooga improves to 3-0-0 on the year, all by shutout, while Gardner-Webb falls to 3-4-0.

 

Sophomore Donna-Kay Henry was fouled outside the box. Both she and her opponent received yellow cards, but the Lady Mocs were awarded a free kick. Smith took the shot from outside the box on the right side and lifted the ball over GWU keeper Samantha Rupert’s head to connect with the back of the net for the sudden victory.

 

“Gardner-Webb is a very good team and has already played teams we already know like Western Carolina,” UTC Head Coach J.D. Kyzer said. “They are very strong and physical and played with a good system.

 

“I thought we played really hard, but were flat in the first half and didn’t have any composure. We talked about it at halftime and we fixed the problem. They listened well and it worked out for us. We used a lot of people in the game.”

 

Chattanooga outshot the Bulldogs in regulation by a 12-6 margin and had a 5-1 combined edge in the overtime periods. Smith took six shots for the Lady Mocs with four on goal while junior Kelly Downs had one shot-on-goal in four attempts and sophomore Donna-Kay Henry had three shots with all on goal.

 

Gardner-Webb tested Chattanooga keeper Taylor Davidson just twice in the contest as she nabbed her third consecutive shutout of the year.

 

The Lady Mocs will take Kyzer’s alma mater, USC Upstate, Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. Results will be available at GoMocs.com following the game.

 

 

Duquesne 1, College of Charleston 0

 

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The College of Charleston women's soccer team lost a 1-0 decision to Duquesne in the first game of the 2009 Hilton Garden Hokie Invitational on Friday afternoon.

 

With the loss, the Cougars fell to 2-2-1 on the year, while Duquesne improved to 3-3. Charleston returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 13 when they play host Virginia Tech at 3 p.m.

 

In the first half, Duquesne scored the games lone goal in the 20th minute, as Morgan Herbert scored off an assist from Shayla Bergerson. The Dukes outshot the Cougars 7-2 in the period.

 

In the second half, Charleston goalie Sarah Wiggers (Cincinnati, Ohio) kept the Cougars in the match, stopping four shots in goal in the period. Duquesne, however, was just as strong defensively in the second as they were in the first, as they held the Cougars to two shots to preserve the shutout.

 

Duquesne goalie Gabby Morin made three saves in goal to earn the shutout victory, while Wiggers made a total of six saves for Charleston. For the game, Duquesne outshot the Cougars 11-4, as three of Charleston's shots were on goal.

 

 

High Point 1, Wofford 0

 

SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? The Wofford Women’s Soccer was defeated by High Point 1-0 at Snyder Field Friday night. The Terrier’s had several strong chances in the game however Panther’s Laura Shupe had the one goal to take the game.

 

In the first half, the first fifteen minutes of play was primarily in the midfield. High Point had the first four shots on goal, all of which were wide of the net. The Terriers had their first chance of the night at 32:05 when Rachel Blackburn took a shot from 15 yard out that was saved. Wofford added a second shot with just under two minutes to play in the half on a shot by Anne Phillips.

 

Wofford controlled play early in the second half, with two shots by Maggie McLaughlin. With 22:25 left in the second half, Sydney Reed took a shot from the left side of the box that went just wide of the right post. Two minutes later, the Panthers got on the scoreboard when Laura Shupe took a shot from the top of the box that went into the top left corner of the net. Danielle Eldridge had the assist at the 69:48 mark.

 

With 3:40 left in the game, Wofford’s Jewel Kawamoto played a free kick into the box, but the Terriers were unable to get a shot on goal. The Panthers were able to hold on in the final minutes for the 1-0 win, their first of the season.

 

For Wofford, goalie Erika Christensen made four saves with one goal against, while Marisa Abbott made two saves for the shutout win. High Point was whistled for six fouls to Wofford’s five, and High Point had a three to one edge on corner kicks.

 

 

Virginia Tech 4, UNC Greensboro 0

 

BLACKSBURG, Va. ? Virginia Tech’s Marika Gray scored a pair of goals and Kelly Conheeney had a goal and two assists as the Hokies topped UNC Greensboro 4-0 at the Hilton Garden Hokie Classic on Friday.

 

The Spartans (2-4) outshot Virginia Tech (4-2) 9-6 and held a 5-1 edge in corner kicks, but could not find the back of the net for the third time in the last four games.

 

The Hokies took control with three first-half goals. Gray got the scoring started in the ninth minute, converting a Conheeney pass in front of the goal to stake Virginia Tech to a 1-0 lead.

 

Conheeney made it 2-0 on a free kick in the 18th minute, notching her third goal on the season.

 

Gray and Conheeney hooked up again just before halftime, with Gray depositing a Conheeney pass into the bottom left corner of the net in the 42nd minute.

 

The Hokies capped the scoring in the 54th minute, with Jennifer Harvey nodding home a Julian Johnson pass.

 

Trailing 4-0, UNCG ramped up its offensive pressure. Casey Godwin put UNCG’s first shot on frame in the 66th minute, forcing a Robin Chidester save. Freshman Tabitha Padgett followed suit, forcing another Chidester save in the 71st minute.

 

Senior Leigh Riordon forced Chidester’s third save with 9:09 left in the contest, just moments after she checked back into the game.

 

Virginia Tech changed keepers in the 84th minute and UNCG immediately tested the new net-minder, drawing a corner kick less than 20 seconds later. Senior Lauren Lopez got a shot off, but Rebekah Brook was there to make her lone stop of the evening.

 

The Spartans continued to keep the ball in their offensive half of the field, drawing another corner kick in the 87th minute, but could not get a shot off.

 

UNCG held Virginia Tech without a shot for the final 36:46 of the game.

 

Padgett and Lopez led UNCG with two shots each.

 

The four goals allowed were the most surrendered by UNCG since a 5-0 loss to North Carolina in the second round of the NCAA tournament in 2003.

 

The Spartans return to action at noon on Sunday, when they will face Duquesne on the final day of the Hilton Garden Hokie Classic. The Dukes downed College of Charleston 1-0 earlier Friday.

 

 

UNC Wilmington 1, Furman 0

 

CLEMSON, S.C. - UNC Wilmington’s Jenna Evans scored with less than 10 minutes left to lift the Seahawks over Furman 1-0 and hand Furman its first loss of the season on Friday afternoon at the Carolinas’ Cup at Historic Riggs Field in Clemson, S.C.

 

The loss dropped Furman to 5-1 on the season and halted the Paladins’ 10-match unbeaten streak which dated back to last October.  The Seahawks improved to 3-2 on the campaign.

 

Evans received a pass from Megan Novak and bested Paladin goalkeeper Jessica Smith at 80:04 for her first goal of the season and the game-winning tally.  UNCW held a 12-2 edge in shots on goal and limited Furman to just two total shots in the second half.

 

Furman could not mount a rally in the final 10 minutes and was reduced to 10 players at 81:01 when senior center back Margaret Antonik was sent off after receiving a red card.  Smith took the loss in goal despite stopping 11 shots.  UNCW’s Chandler Follett earned the win with two saves.

 

Furman returns to action on Sunday when it takes on host Clemson in the Carolinas’ Cup finale at 2:30 p.m. at Riggs Field.

 

 

Winthrop 1, Appalachian State 0

BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University women's soccer outshot Winthrop Friday night 15-7 but was unable to put one in the back of the net, falling 1-0 at the Appalachian Soccer Stadium.

The Eagles scored the only goal of the game when Kathryn Leach kicked a ball from 35 yards out and was headed into the net by an ASU defender. The goal would prove to be the game-winner.

The 1-0 score was the fourth in five games for Appalachian, going 2-2 in those games.

The Mountaineers had plenty of scoring chances, especially in the first five minutes. Just two minutes into the match Meggie Graham drilled a shot from 15 yards out of the left post. Just three minutes later Taylor Dunlap hit the crossbar.

In the sixth minute, Sydney Hill broke away from the defense but her shot was saved by Kelsy Weavil.

Kelsy Weavil earned her first win of the season making five saves while Caroline Clarke suffered the loss, making three saves. Emma White played the second half in goal for ASU and made two saves.

The Mountaineers return to action on Sunday when they travel to Longwood for a 4 p.m. match.


Presbyterian 1, The Citadel 0

CLINTON, S.C. - The Citadel soccer team lost, 1-0, to the Blue Hose of Presbyterian Friday night at Martin Stadium in Clinton, S.C.

Presbyterian's Emily Davis scored an unassisted goal in the 56th minute of the game. Both teams battled back and forth in the midfield for the last 34 minutes. The Citadel drops to 2-3 on the season while Presbyterian improves to 2-3.

Nikkita Persaud led the Bulldogs with three shots with two on goal while Nikki Mares tallied three shots with one on goal. Amy Loughran also took three shots and Shanna Couch recorded one shot. For the first time this season, goalkeeper Whitney Nave didn't collect a save.

"It was not one of our best performances of the year in the first half," said head coach Bob Winch. "The second half was much better. It was disappointing as we are trying to establish some consistency."

The Bulldogs will remain on the road as they travel to take on Coastal Carolina Tuesday, Sept. 15 at 6 p.m. in Conway S.C.
