SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? Sophomore Alexa Jones of Furman has been named the Southern Conference Women’s Soccer Player of the Week for all games played through August 31. Jones helped the Paladins start the season 2-0 by posting wins over USC Upstate and Presbyterian last week.
A forward from Lawrenceville, Ga., Jones tallied a goal in Furman’s 3-0 victory over USC Upstate in the season opener. She then tied a school and conference record with four goals Friday against Presbyterian as the Paladins posted a 6-2 victory over the Blue Hose. Jones came off the bench against PC and picked up two goals before halftime. She then added two additional markers in the opening 20 minutes of the second half.
It was the eighth time a Southern Conference player has scored four goals in a single match. The Citadel’s Nicole Martinoli also tallied four goals in a match last week against Alabama State. The last time a SoCon performer tallied four goals in a single match prior to last week was 2004 when Davidson’s Karla Koehrn scored four times against The Citadel.
Furman returns to action, Friday, September 4 when the Paladins visit Jacksonville University to take part in the JU Invitational. The Paladins and Dolphins will kick off at 7:00 p.m.
