Wake Forest Tops Furman In Exhibition Play

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Third-ranked Wake Forest netted three goals in the opening 23 minutes of the second half to down Furman 3-0 in exhibition men’s soccer action Thursday evening before a crowd of 1,434 at Stone Soccer Stadium.

 

Corben Bone opened the scoring for the Demon Deacons at the 47:41 mark.  Anthony Arena’s shot from outside the box was saved into the path of Andy Lubahn.  Zimmer deflected Lubahn’s shot, but Bone finished into an empty goal mouth to give Wake Forest the 1-0 lead.

 

In the 64th minute, Kyle Adams played a long ball down the left channel for Ike Opara who beat Zimmer to up the lead to 2-0.  Chris Estridge capped the scoring at 72:22 finding the end of an Alfredo Rodriguez cross to the top of the six-yard box for the final 3-0 margin.

 

Wake Forest held a 15-3 edge on shot attempts and 3-2 advantage on corner kicks.  Akira Fitzgerald earned the victory in net for the Demon Deacons while Zimmer absorbed the loss for Furman after replacing an injured Alec Kann in the 48th minute.

 

The Paladins will kickoff the 2009 regular season on September 1, when they host Presbyterian College in a 7 p.m. contest at Stone Stadium.
